在初中的历史课上就学过：中国的历史从古代到现代经历了一个开口向上的抛物线。从唐朝的开元盛世到清朝的闭关锁国；后来招致欧洲列强、日本美国的入侵；再到综合国力直逼发达国家的现代中国。而在这个大起大落的过程中，中国人失掉了自信力了吗？
这是一个非常“大”的问题，可能现在世界上最精英的社会学家也难以回答。而鲁迅先生却以此为题，而且说的头头是道、字字在理，真不愧为名家之作。
以鲁迅先生的观点，中国人失掉自信力了吗？是的，但又不全是。所谓“自信”与“自欺”，区别就在于“信”的是真切实际的还是虚无缥缈的东西。在人生的旅途中，一次考试的失利、一次面试的失败、甚至一个鄙夷的眼神都会使我们失去自信力。可以毫不夸张地这样说：几乎所有的人都曾经失去过自信力。那么为什么这个世界会存在不同的等级、不同的阶层呢？原因在于有的人重新找回了“自信”；而剩下的人则找到了“自欺”。正如当年的中国——信过“地”和“物”，信过“国联”，却从来没有信过“自己”。失去了自信力之后，居然迷信于“国联”的力量，又失去了他信力。最终导致了“求神拜佛，怀古伤今”，彻底步入“自欺”的深渊之中。好在一代一代“埋头苦干、拚命硬干、为民请命、舍身求法”的伟人们前赴后继、锲而不舍地又把中国给拉了出来。而这些伟大的人们，就是鲁迅先生笔下的“中国的脊梁”。
正是这些有恩于中国的伟人们，有的得以名垂青史，为后人所瞻仰。而更多的则被黑暗彻底吞没，从这个世上消失了。他们曾经存在过的唯一证据，就是中国的黑暗越来越少，而光明照亮的角落越来越多了。
这些民族的筋骨、国家的脊梁是有自信力的。他们的自信和某些人整日生活在颓废之中、千方百计蒙骗自己形成了鲜明的对比。我们的国家之所以能有今天的强盛，和他们的舍生忘死、他们的为民请命是分不开的。
