较为正式或者更为书面的表达方式是，12:12=》it is twelve (minutes) past twelve；或者，3:15=》 it is a quarter past three; 或者，it is fifteen (minutes) past three. 表示三点过了15分钟。
但是要特别注意类似于2：58 这种时间的表述，2:58=》two，fifty eight 或者，it is two to three. 表示离三点还差两分钟。

日期在英式英语中的写法：

英式英语中“日”在“月份”的前面，有需要的话可以加上序数词的结尾。月份前的介词基本上可以省略，“年”的前面可以加个逗号，不过这个逗号在英式英语中已经不常见了。

比如：5(th) (of) October(,) 2016

在口语中，如果把“日”放在“月份”前，“日”的前面要有定冠词，“月”的前面要有介词：

5 October 2016 要说成 the fifth of October, two thousand and sixteen

如果把“月份”放在“日”的前面，英式英语中要用定冠词，

October 5, 2016 说成 October the fifth, two thousand and sixteen

美式英语中不用定冠词

2000年以后，具体哪一年要读成基数词

2000 读成two thousand

2003 读成 two thousand and three

2000年以前的年份的读法：前2个数看成一个数，后2个数看成一个数，如果后2位数是00到09，一定要用hundred and连接。比如：

1999读成 nineteen hundred and ninety-nine 或者nineteen ninety-nine

1806 读成eighteen hundred and six或者eighteen oh six

如果只有年份没有具体日子，年份前用介词in.

在日期方面，美英的表达方式是有差别的。以日为先，月份为后，此为英国式，美国式则与此相反。

如二零零九年三月二日的写法：March 2, 2009（美），2nd March 2009（英）。

在美式的写法中，1st， 2nd， 3rd的st， nd， rd是不使用的。由于日期书面表达不同，读法也不一样。如1987年4月20日，英式的写法是20th April 1987，读成the twentieth of April， nineteen eighty-seven；美式的表达是April 20,1987，则读成April the twentieth， nineteen eighty-seven。同样，全部用数字表达日期时，英美也有差别。
