His blade came down in a mighty arc - but the insect continued on its way! The crowd was aghast. The greatest swordsman had missed his target completely, yet he continued to smile.
"Why are you so happy?" someone yelled. "You missed!"
"Ah," replied the swordsman, "you weren't watching very carefully. They fly lives, yes - but he will never be a father."

Jonesie The Great Lion Hunter
A small village was troubled by a man-eating lion. So its leaders sent a message to the great hunter, Jonesie, to come and kill the beast.
For several nights the hunter lay in wait for the lion, but it never appeared. Finally, he told the village chief to kill a cow and give him its hide. Draping the skin over his shoulders, he went to the pasture to wait for the lion.
In the middle of the night, the villagers woke to the sound of blood-curdling shrieks coming from the pasture. As they carefully approached, they saw the hunter on the ground, groaning in pain. There was no sign of the lion.

小学英语教学旨在培养儿童的学习态度,学习兴趣和良好的语音、语感,并强调“听说”领先,“读写”跟上。但在实际教学中我们往往较重视听、说、写能力的训练和培养,而在读的方面较为忽视。语言技能是语言能力的重要组成部分,它包括听,说,读,写四个方面的技能及这四项技能的综合运用能力,而提高阅读能力则是提高听,说,读,写能力的关键。通过阅读扩大知识,增加词汇量,交流时就不会言不达意,写作时才能内容丰富,语言地道,那么应该怎样搞好英语阅读教学,同时提高小学生的英语阅读能力呢?
一、培养学生的阅读兴趣
兴趣是最好的老师,是学习积极性中最现实,最活跃的成分。一个学生只有对英语阅读产生了浓厚的兴趣,才会把阅读看成自己的愿望和需要,才会由被动阅读转为主动阅读,才会有阅读的自信心。相反,如果没有兴趣,阅读就成了一种负担。所以要想提高学生的阅读能力,必须在教学的起始阶段就要注重培养学生的阅读兴趣。
1.精心选择阅读材料
阅读英语应当是轻松愉快,也可以是轻松愉快的。要做到这一点,阅读材料的选择是首要的。也就是要选择生动有趣,富有吸引力而又能启发心智的材料或书籍。小学英语科学普及出版社所选择的阅读内容故事性强,对学生既有吸引力又有启发性,学生很乐意去读和学,教学效果也很好。另外,根据课本所学的知识,并在此基础上,编写和收集小英文故事、小短文等。由于面对是小学生,所以材料内容要生动、有趣,激发小学生的阅读兴趣。材料可选择熟识的童话故事、日常生活情景、各国各地区的生活文化介绍等内容,要让学生感到阅读是一种享受,是欣赏文章,而不是呆板地读文章。
2.给予适当的阅读指导

坦也曾说过:“提出一个问题比解决一个问题更为重要,因为有问题,才会有思考,有了思考才有可能找到解决问题的方法和途径。”然而在我们的小学英语阅读教学中,教师讲解—学生自读—教师提问—学生答问的模式却比比皆是,学生在课堂中总是处于“被组织”的状态,主动权始终掌握在教师手中,提问成了教师的专利,学生的任务就是答问。所以,在阅读教学中激发学生的阅读动机,使学生的思维得到充分的调动是非常有必要的。
1.在阅读前设置问题
让学生带着问题去阅读,使教学和阅读更具有目的性。学生通过对问题的思考与回答,就能准确判断出对阅读材料的理解如何。并且使学生对课文的理解更深入。进入高年级阶段英语学习,学生学习能力和效果的分化越来越明显。学习能力较强的学生如鱼得水,提高极大;而学习有困难的孩子却越来越力不从心,赶不上老师的要求和同学的脚步。针对这样的情况,教师应调整方法,让能干的孩子提问,老师则根据问题的难易请相应程度的学生作答,要掌握好“问”和“答”的尺度,让每个孩子在课堂上都有收获和提高。

1 .给学生创造良好的阅读环境
课堂固然是教学的主阵地,但教师也要充分利用校园里的设施为学生提供英语课外阅读的机会,精心打造有利于学生英语阅读的环境,使学生在无意识当中提高学习英语的兴趣,丰富英语知识。如:
(1)在校园里设立英语标志牌或标语,为各种教室配上中英文标识。
(2)办好英语黑板报,英语长廊等宣传栏目,刊登英语小故事、英语诗歌、英语文化背景知识等。

故事和歌谣是学生较喜欢的形式,老师可以引导学生将阅读学的内容改编成故事或歌谣的形式,如试着把课文中的对话转变为一段文章,让学生在动中学,在乐中学。这不仅可以增进学生对课文的理解,同时也是提高学生写作能力的一种方法,可以为今后的作文教育打好伏笔。我们还可以参照语文的教学方法,给学生一些图片,让学生进行看图写话的训练,自编故事。另外也可以在教学中加入多媒体的应用,这样可以根据阅读内容呈现情景,使教学过程变得形象、生动、活泼,营造良好的学习氛围,使学生乐学、爱学,激发求知欲望。
四、提高阅读速度
在英语阅读过程中,不同的阅读任务可以运用不同的策略和技巧:
1、 根据上下文猜测词义
小学生在阅读中碰到生词,可根据上下文的信息和句法去推断词义。例如这一段There are many mice in a house. The man of the house gets a cat. The cat kills many of the mice.其中kill是一个新单词,但学生能大概猜出这词的意思。
2、 预测内容
在阅读过程中不断验证和修正自己预测的过程。例如《What am I?》这篇短文,开头What am I? Please guess.就把小学生带入文章的猜想中。接着I’m big,just like a box. I have a big face without a nose or eyes. 五、因材施教
由于各个小学生智力发展等多个方面原因,小学生的英语能力差别很大,所以英语阅读教学要针对实际因材施教,提高各层次小学生的的英语能力。把阅读材料分A、B二个层次:A是基础篇。B是发展篇。基础篇是与课本内容相当的短文,是对课本知识的复习。而发展篇是在这个知识点的基础上,从短文的内容、长度、难度略加高一些。
