任何一艘横渡太平洋的船舶经常会一连好几天有那种较小的信天翁伴航。这些信天翁能陪伴着船飞行一小时之久而看不出翅膀有什么动作，或者只是偶尔挥动一下。信天翁在滑翔飞行的鸟类中首屈一指。这类鸟能够驾驭空气，使之为自己的目的服务，但是在空气的阻力面前又不得不屈服。野鸭、鸽子、鹧鸪等则是以另一种方式飞行的鸟类。它们具有坚强如钢的肌肉，以势不可挡的力量使劲扇动短小的翅膀，在精疲力尽之前可以在迎面吹来的大风中顶风飞行很长的距离；但是，一旦精力耗尽了，它们也就飞不动了。如果海面上的风迫使它们作了长途旅行，你可以从地上拾起那些再也飞不动的野鸭、鸽子。燕子充分把这两大类鸟的飞行优点兼而有之。它不会疲倦，也不会夸耀自己的力量。它是天生的空中之物，从这里飞往北方营建家园，又从那里飞回来，一路上可能飞行几千公里，并且沿途喂着它们已经会飞的雏燕。

古时候，橄榄坝人的祖先一直过着流浪的生活，他们多想找一块富饶美丽的土地，过上安定幸福的日子啊！
一天，突然从天上传来一阵叫声：“到橄榄坝去吧，那里会让你们过上幸福的日子！”
大家抬头一看，原来是一只绿孔雀。绿孔雀说完，就展翅向远处飞去。人们欢欢喜喜地跟着绿孔雀向前跑。
跑啊，跑啊，历尽了艰难困苦，终于到了一个大坝子。但是，那里到处都是沼泽，成群的蚊子黑压压地飞来飞去，毒蛇缠在树上吐着芯子。有的人看了，说：“绿孔雀不是骗大家吗？”
但是一些坚强的人留下来了，决心用自己的双手来建设橄榄坝。
一年年过去了，橄榄坝变了样。一片片整齐的竹楼；竹楼周围是数不清的竹丛和果树，有芒果、木瓜、荔枝、椰子、柚子、芭蕉……一树树、一枝枝挂满了累累果实；远处是葱郁的树林、成群的牲畜、金黄的稻田……到处是欣欣向荣的景象。
绿孔雀没有骗人。
后来这个寨子就起名叫绿孔雀寨。
