WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The bottom line for the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan is no deep cuts in troop levels, President Barack Obama told congressional leaders.
During a session with a bipartisan group of congressional leaders on Tuesday, the president also made it clear that the U.S. mission in Afghanistan would not be narrowed down to just hunting al-Qaida leaders, according to U.S. TV and wire reports Wednesday. Analysts said, based on Obama's remarks at the meeting, that he seemed to be searching for some sort of middle ground. The president said he wanted to "dispense with the straw man argument that this is about either doubling down or leaving Afghanistan." While leading congressional Democrats said they would support whatever Obama decided, others challenged him about sending more troops. Republicans pressed him to order an escalation without delay. Washington is currently split on the future direction of the Afghan strategy. Top military leaders and opposition Republicans are pressing Obama to act quickly to increase the present 68,000-troop level by as many as 40,000. Meanwhile, senior White House advisors are reportedly pushing back the request for sending large number of additional troops to Afghanistan. Instead, they said, the U.S. should focus on faster military training of Afghan forces, the assassinations of al-Qaida leaders and support for the government of neighboring Pakistan in its fight against the Taliban. As the casualty toll grows and public support for the Afghan war wanes, Obama is carrying out a major strategy review of his Afghanistan policy, which could either lead to more troops being sent or a cutback in the 68,000-strong U.S. force there.

The headmaster of a middle school in sou

Should Schools Suspend Troublesome Students?
I recently read a news story about a school in England whose headmaster often suspends misbehaving students. The headmaster believes that strong discipline improves both students’ behavior and academic performance. His school’s exam results have greatly improved ring his time in charge.
I believe the headmaster is correct to take this action. If a few students are always behaving poorly in class then it will negatively affect other students’ learning. As a result, many innocent students will suffer and they will fail to achieve their full potential. If the naughty students are removed from the class, the others can learn in peace. Hopefully the misbehaving students will learn their lessons and when they return their behavior will be better.
If I were in charge of a school, I would also be very strict with the students who don’t behave well. I would first warn and then suspend students who interrupt the learning of others or disrespect their teachers. But I would also visit the poor student’s home and discuss the problem with his parents so we could find a solution.
Should Schools Suspend Troublesome Students?
I recently read a news story about a school in England whose headmaster often suspends misbehaving students. The headmaster believes that strong discipline improves both students’ behavior and academic performance. His school’s exam results have greatly improved ring his time in charge.
While I congratulate the headmaster on his success I do not agree with the methods he used to achieve it. Suspending students should be the final type of punishment used for misbehaving students, not the first. Removing such students from the school may be beneficial to the remaining students but it doesn’t solve the problem of poor behavior. It only shifts the problem from the school to the community. If these naughty students are not in school, they will make trouble out of school. Moreover, as the parents of many of these students are working, the students are unsupervised(无人监管的) and thus are in danger of falling in with local criminals who will only encourage such bad behavior and even teach them worse things.
If I were in charge of his school I would place the naughty students in a class of their own. This way the other students could study in peace but the naughty students could remain under the supervision(监管) of the school and its teachers. The teachers in the naughty class would also have more time to focus on correcting the actions of these misbehaving students.

have enough water by the year 2025.

A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people lack enough water now. The people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.

P-A-I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three-thousand-million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.

Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.

The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also result in more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new instries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water of agriculture.

The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

HOUSTON, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The Offshore Techonology Conference, one of the world's largest offshore technology shows, kicked off here Monday.

TRIPOLI, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, youngest son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was killed in NATO's strike against Gaddafi's house, said a spokesman of the Libyan government.

The NATO attack against Gaddafi's house resulted in the deaths of Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, 29, youngest son of Gaddafi, and three of Gaddafi's grandchildren, said Mossa Ibrahim, the government spokesman.

The leader himself and his wife, who were in the house, were in good health, while other people injured in the attack, said the spokesman.

This is a direct operation to assassinate the leader, said the spokesman.

The attacks had no legal or political foundations, he said, saying the strike was a violation of the international law.

Asserting he would not leave, embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi floated on Saturday a proposal for a ceasefire and negotiations in a televised speech.

He said that all parties concerned should follow the truce, and the NATO forces must stop their attacks.

Gaddafi ruled out the possibility that he will quit and leave Libya, which he has been ruling over the past 41 years.

Gaddafi slammed the air raids by NATO, which started to attack his fortified compound in the capital Tripoli.

The world's major powers, the UK, the US and France, started on March 19 to launch strikes from the air and sea against Gaddafi's forces after the UN Security Council passed a resolution to impose a no-fly zone over Libya and authorize "all necessary measures" to protect civilians in Libya.

1

I typically do the crossword puzzle first and it is in the Sports page of the Nashua Telegraph ..usually.. so I will say that I like "the crossword page" best.
I'm old fashioned in the way that enjoy getting my news from an actual newspaper so I read the entire paper usually and the order I read the different sections varies but might typically go; Front page, Local news page, Sports page, Classifieds and Entertainment pages.. but this is far from set, it's very fluid. One day I might be interested in a local topic and go for that page first another day I might need to see the Red Sox score so I read sports page first etc..The only thing that remains constant is that I will read the whole newspaper if I have it.

2
I usually start with the obits, then move on to the births. Next, I like to read the want ads and do the crossword puzzle. After that, I am ready to tackle the news. I read the entire Missoulian, no big feat.

I guess I like to read the obits because I have lived in Montana for so long. It seems like I always know someone, and I feel like I am honoring them by reading their story. Also, it makes me feel better if a person dies at a ripe old age. I am getting up there in years, after all. I like to see the births because I was a midwife for many years, so again I know a lot of the families. The crossword works two ways. Either I do great and feel better that I don't have dementia, or I do terrible and well, that is a worry, isn't it?

4
I live in a town with two dailies, and I read one at home and the other at work.
In both places, the paper needs to be shared. So the first question should be, who is already reading what when I sit down to breakfast (at home) or to lunch (at work)?
At home, everyone wants the local section. My husband reads the editorials; my older daughter does too, plus the political cartoons and the letters to the editor; I actually read the local news in the local news section, and then some of the editorials; my younger daughter just wants to look at the weather. So this section is usually under demand by everyone and when you get to read it is something that is negotiated.
At work, the section under greatest demand is sports. To me, this section has been hived off for easy disposal/recycling. The Friday and Saturday NYT crossword, if I can remember, will get photocopied at work so I can do it at home over the weekend.
If I had my complete freedom over the paper, I’d read it as follows:
1. Front section
2. Local News
3. Northwest Life/Life and Arts (some of the articles, plus the advice columns and the funnies)
Then:
4. Scan the front of the business section
5. Leaf through the occasional suppliments, such as the entertainment pull out at the end of the week, the outdoors section, etc. if interested and if I have time.
Discard: classifieds, other ads, Sports.
Oh, and I sometimes get a hold of our work place’s Wall Street Journal, but that’s hard to track down. There’s one co-worker that basically hoards it at her desk.
