No one knows how man learned to make words. Perhaps he began by making sounds like those made by animals. Perhaps he grunted(发出呼噜声)like a pig when he lifted something heavy. A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, “What happened?”
Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it
runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is
danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee found some food, it goes back to
his home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little
dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger
comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音)when pleased. Some birds make several different
sounds, each with its own meaning.
But human beings have something that no animals have –-- a large number of words about
things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other
people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of
the things what have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No
animals has the wonderful power of language.

centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.
People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about
fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example,
contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all these. The words we know

告诉你我今年年初三了,初二的阅读理解并没有和初三的有太多差别,就是生词多一点。
We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.
It stood outside a furniture(家具)shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack(车顶架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.
As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake(超车)?”
Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers(警官)inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church(教堂). One of the officers came to me.
“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”
I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”
He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. “Well, well,” he said and laughed. “It’s a bookshelf you’ve got there! We thought it was--er, something else.”
My wife began to laugh. Suddenly I understood why the police drove here. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a bookshelf, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.
1、From the story we know that _________.
A.the writer was poor and didn’t buy the bookshelf for his wife
B.the writer’s wife didn’t like the bookshelf at all
C.the writer was always glad to buy something for his wife
D.the writer was not very glad to buy the bookshelf for his wife
2、What made the writer think that carrying furniture was “a good idea”?
A.He could drive slowly and it was safe.
B.Other drivers would let him go first.
C.His wife could use a new bookshelf.
D.He could save a lot of money and time.
3、Why were the police and other drivers so kind to the writer?
A.Because they thought the writer liked studying very much and needed a bookshelf.
B.Because they didn’t think it was polite to overtake a car with a bookshelf on it.
C.Because they thought somebody in the writer’s family had died and he needed help.
D.Because they thought it was dangerous to carry a bookshelf on a car.
4、Why did the writer’s wife begin to laugh?
A.Because now she knew what mistake the police had made.
B.Because at last her husband understood why the police had driven to the church.
C.Because the officer was always looking at the flowers and the bookshelf.
D.Because the police had helped them a lot.
5、When did the officers begin to realize(意识到)they had made a mistake?
A.Before they arrived at the church.
B.Before they overtook(overtake的过去式)the writer’s car.
C.After one of them looked at the flowers and the bookshelf carefully at the church.

Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): (6%)
He knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability, he was known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.
But two weeks ago, Alex, an African Grey Parrot, died of old age. He was 31. Irene Pepperberg, a scientist at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for most of its life.
In 1976, Pepperberg, a doctoral student at Harvard, bought the new-born bird from a pet shop. At that time, scientists didn’t think that any bird could learn to communicate with humans.
Using new ways of teaching, Pepperberg helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers as well as colors and shapes.
In experiments, Pepperberg would ask one trainer to compete (比赛) with Alex for small prizes like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help with pronunciation.
Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue triangle (三角形), he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it—what it was made of.
Like other parrots, he also learned some expressions in the lab such as “calm down” and “Good morning”. He could express feelings like joy and anger. Once ring one training class, he suddenly stopped and said: “wanna go eat dinner.”
Even up to the week he died, Alex was working with Pepperberg on hard-to-pronounce words. As she put him in the cage for the night, Alex looked at her and said: “You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.”
He was found dead in his cage the next morning.

4. What caused the death of Alex?

Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape.
