首先用 waste gas 肯定正确来
至于答源案用 wasting 我想他是想以动名词做gas 的定语。因为在初中阶段，貌似只学了waste的动词用法，而没有学它的形容词用法。
用wasting gas语法上说的通，但我觉得不符合语言习惯，因为“废水，废气”等在牛津词典中已有明确翻译
我们尽量以词典为准和依据。
英语有时不能用对和错来评判，只能看哪个更为标准，当然也分是否是严格使用的情况
