个人感觉，我从来来也不看什么英自语书籍，因为我感觉对于一个中学生，学习已经很累了，各科的任务量都不小，应该没什么时间全心投入英语中去看书记，我认为还是应该平时做好练习册中的阅读理解就可以了，不必逐词翻译，大概意思弄明白就可以，至于里面的生词就在于平时的积累了。
如果非要看书，可以看下《书虫》 英汉对应 经典文章 对学习很有帮助

楼主是想提高哪方面呢？词汇、句型、语法还是阅读呢？

我是刚刚参加完中考的广东考生，就我本人来说，我觉得阅读与语法是最重要的。

阅读练习我推荐吉林教育出版社的《阅读先锋》，非常好的阅读练习书，里面分A B C三个部分，难度依次递增，包含了完形填空、文段阅读几种类型，非常适合初中生练习。我三年来都做这本练习题，感觉最好就是这本。如果你做完中考版的，中考英语就没问题了。

语法的话我推荐大夏英语的《初中生一定要做的语法题》，也是我做过的，不过题量有点多，楼主得有耐心，想要好成绩就要付出啊。

语法参考书我同样推荐大夏英语的《初中语法全解》，里面的知识点很全，也很浅显易懂，不会冗长啰嗦，我们班很多人在用。

当然 语感也是重要的 培养语感的话 可以选择去看英文原声电影 听英文歌也是不错的选择。

就我自身来讲，我偏科，特烦数学，喜欢语文，但是英语对我来说比语文简单多了（也许是广东的比较简单吧，哈哈），看完一本简单的语法书，接着在阅读方面下多一点苦功，至于单词嘛（我是不背单词的。。。。）记住是什么意思就OK了，再加上中考前一阵苦练，英语中考就so easy啦！

上面都是我在应试教育制度下多年学习英语的经验，希望对楼主有点帮助吧。

不知道你上初几了，其实英语书的课文里就穿插了几部不错的，比如说《汤姆索亚版历险记》，《爱丽权丝漫游奇境记》都很适合7，8年级读，当然，如果你的词汇量大，觉得太简单的话还可以看看<金银岛>,〈小妇人〉，〈父与子〉，这些很适合初三毕业后闲暇时候去读，如果想继续提高一个英文水平的话也可以试试〈雾都孤儿〉不过这一般到高三或大学才能够流利阅读哒。呵呵，至于具体选哪一本，就看你的情况而定咯。不过我觉得读名著最重要的不是应付差事，细细品味其中的文字才是最好的效果，同时你的英语水平也会在不知不觉中提高许多呢！

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.
