“God made the world, but the Dutch made Holland.” True to this saying, the people of the Netherlands are again “making” their land.
About 1980 the Netherlands will complete a project begun in the 1920’s: transforming the Zyuder Zee, an inlet (小港) of the North Sea into dry land and a freshwater lake. As the first stop a nineteen-mile-long barrier dam, rising twenty-five feet above sea level, closed the entrance to the Zuider Zee. Then the experimental polder of a hundred acres preceded the first and smallest of the main polders fifty thousand acres that became dry land in 1930. The fifth and largest polder 150,000 acres will be the last of the Zuider Zee works.
Farmers for the new polder (开拓地) come from every province. The Eastern Flevoland polder, completed in 1957, became farmland for many from the province of Zealand which was badly hit by the disastrous floods of 1953.

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the intriguing story was reported of a tramp(流浪汉) who, apparently through no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. However that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. He knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability, he was known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.
But two weeks ago, Alex, an African Grey Parrot, died of old age. He was 31. Irene Pepperberg, a scientist at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for most of its life.
In 1976, Pepperberg, a doctoral student at Harvard, bought the new-born bird from a pet shop. At that time, scientists didn’t think that any bird could learn to communicate with humans.
Using new ways of teaching, Pepperberg helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers as well as colors and shapes.
In experiments, Pepperberg would ask one trainer to compete (比赛) with Alex for small prizes like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help with pronunciation.
Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue triangle (三角形), he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it—what it was made of.
Like other parrots, he also learned some expressions in the lab such as “calm down” and “Good morning”. He could express feelings like joy and anger. Once ring one training class, he suddenly stopped and said: “wanna go eat dinner.”
Even up to the week he died, Alex was working with Pepperberg on hard-to-pronounce words. As she put him in the cage for the night, Alex looked at her and said: “You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.”
