Because of the need for arrows in water warfare, Zhou Yu asked Zhuge Liang to be responsible for the construction of 100,000 arrows in 10 days.

鲁肃见了诸葛亮。诸葛亮说：“这件事要请你帮我的忙。希望你能借给我20只船，每只船上30个军士，船要用青布慢子遮起来，还要一千多个草把子，排在船两边。不过，这事千万不能让周瑜知道。”

一、历史原型

《三国志·吴书·孙权传》“曹公攻濡须，权与相拒月馀。（裴松之注）魏略曰：（建安十八年214年）权乘大船来观军，公使弓弩乱发，箭着其船，船偏重将覆，权因回船，复以一面受箭，箭均船平，乃还”，这是草船借箭的原形，历史明确记载借箭人是孙权，并不是诸葛亮。
