都是有规律，有迹可循的。
我是高中英语老师。我总结了一套比较方便的方法。
如定语从句，我两节课就能给他们讲完。
比如定语从句该弄懂的就是什么是先行词。
然后搞懂关系代词有哪些，包括that,which,who/whom/whose.
关系副词有when ,where ,why
which一般不指人，who不指物。that既可指人又可指物。弄清楚这个主要用于排除法。
关系代词在句中充当成分，换句话说就是缺成分用关系代词。不缺用关系副词。
第二步就是分析从句的句子成分也就是主谓宾是否完整。若不完整，缺少主语或宾语就用关系代词，到时候再根据先行词指人还是指物具体判断。若完整，就用关系副词那组，你再来判断是时间，地点还是原因。

定语从句还有几个情况只用that不能用which的，掌握下就好。
还有一个比较重要的就是非限制性定语从句。就是有逗号隔开的，只用which不用that.
As也可引导非限制性定语从句，在句中有“正如”的意思。还有一种介词+which/whom结构

这就是我总结的学习定语从句方法。比语法书上简练得多。

至于你说的时态，我估计你是定义没弄明白，例句没看懂。这时候要多去分析。
