现在一般的大点的海轮，都是后驾式的，也就是生活区在船尾，他们的生活区一共有6，7层（也就是6，7楼），当然一共3，4层的也有，我看到最高的是9层。
驾驶室一般都在最上一层，这样便于驾驶室的舵工和驾驶员了望和用舵行船。
驾驶室一下的楼层都叫生活区，是船员们的房间，当然还有厕所和餐厅和会议室等，有些船舶甚至还有专门的健身和娱乐室（游轮一般都有）。
主甲板这层（我们上船的话，刚过去站的这层就是了，也就是第一层）一般没有
房间，都是当作仓库，有冰库存放蔬菜食物等，还有其他的工具等。
主甲板以下就是机舱了，机舱里主要有船的主机（主推动装置），发电机组，消防泵，油水分离器等机械设备。
生活区前面就是货仓，我们平常看到一艘船船体都标有刻度，那是它的吃水深度，满载吃水刻度如果是8米，那么它的型深（从船底到主甲板）一共可能有12米左右，因为装货装到8米就满了，为了安全，上面还要留4米（这个不定，根据船的种类不同，要求不同）的干舷。
前面是船艏，主要有绞缆机，和缆绳，是到港的时候把缆绳拉出去栓在岸上的缆桩上，才能靠泊好船！船艏和船尾都有绞缆机，因为当船离港的时候，解开栓在岸上的缆绳时，得把缆绳拉回船上来，但缆绳很长，很粗，很重，靠人力是非常艰难的，所以得用（机械）绞缆机把它拉上船！
