生活中的徐昕穎是個性比較文靜靦腆的小女生，閑暇時，她要麼讀一讀自己喜歡的《兒童文學》、《讀者》等書籍，要麼就是寫一些隨筆。說起如何才能寫好作文，徐昕穎有自己獨到的認識———
「我們每個人每天都要經歷很多事，說很多的話，如果把這些經歷或者話語付諸筆端變成文字，那麼，經過一段時間，你就會發覺：在不知不覺中你的作文有了令你意想不到的改變，最主要的是這是一種標志著寫作文水平提高的改變。」
「所以，在我看來，作文無非就是那一篇篇經過整理、梳理的隨筆而已。而隨筆也是寫好作文的基石。」徐昕穎堅定地說道。
徐昕穎說，可能很多同學都有這樣一種感覺，隨筆寫的時間長了，也存在無話可「寫」的尷尬現象，對此，徐昕穎認為，無話可寫其實也是非常正常的，同學們無須為此而苦惱，她同樣也經歷過這種「尷尬」。「之所以無話可寫，最本質的一個原因還是緣於我們觀察生活不夠。老師或家長時常在我們耳邊常說的一句話就是『寫好作文在於觀察』，其用意很明顯就是要求我們用自己的眼睛去觀察生活中那一些令人感動的、令人愉悅的、令人傷心的、令人難忘的事與物。」
徐昕穎說她很推崇約翰·列濃說過的一句話———當我們正在為生活疲於奔命的時候，生活已經離我們而去。「所以，我們學生不管學習任務有多繁重，應該停下來感悟生活的時候就應該停下來，不要錯過身邊的『風景』———除過看書學習之外，還應該多出去走走，去旅遊、去參加社會實踐……面對外面的精彩世界，相信你會有很多的感悟與想法，將這些感悟與想法用文字記錄下來，讓它們最終變成一篇游記或幾行隨筆……日積月累之後，就會應了一句老話，功到自然成。」
把自己的作文讀給別人聽
在徐昕穎看來，想要自己的作文水平有所提高，那麼就還應將自己的作文讀給老師、家長甚至同學聽，讓他們指出或者幫助修改你的作文中存在的不足之處。
「俗話說，當局者迷，旁觀者清。聽取別人的意見將是你作文提高的一種有效途徑。」徐昕穎說，不少同學總認為自己的作文寫到位了，不容易發現自身的問題，即使發現了也不想「動大手術」改。但是對於別人作文中的問題卻很敏感，關於這一點，老師，家長似乎無須多說，僅僅就學生來說，不論是作文寫得好的同學還是作文寫得比較弱的同學，當他們發現別人作文中不足之處的時候，就會站在不同的角度，從不同的觀點出發對「問題作文」進行評析、指正。「這些東西對我們的作文而言可謂是難能可貴的，如果我們能以這些指正建議為鏡子，對照自己的習作，分析和找出自己習作的長處和短處，取長補短，進行修改，那麼，經過這個程序之後，你會發覺這時候的作文與之前的相比將會有很大的不同。」
