[摘要] 中國加入WTO之後,外貿英語信函作為一種特殊文體,在我國對外貿易的發展中成為了我國與世界接軌的必要橋梁。本文旨在結合英語語言學,通過分析外貿英語信函翻譯的典型例子,重點介紹外貿英語信函的翻譯技巧。

大體而言,外貿英語信函主要有兩種目的:一種用於正式的外貿交易;另一種用於貿易雙方建立友誼或加深情感。針對兩種不同目的,信函翻譯的手段和側重方法也有所區別。在這里,筆者主要是針對兩種外貿英語信函提出幾點翻譯技巧。
一、用於正式外貿交易的英語信函翻譯
1.專業詞彙:外貿英語信函中對專業詞彙的翻譯務必精確、符合經貿專業要求。外貿英語中的價格術語意義固定:有的是單獨的詞,inquiry(詢盤)和offer(報盤);有的是則是由幾個詞構成,to draw on somebody (向某方開出匯票)。這些專業詞彙的翻譯稍微有差錯就會給企業造成負面的影響甚至巨大的損失,如曾有則報道說,某譯者錯將「不銹鋼」譯為「炭素鋼」,這兩字之差就給企業造成近20萬元損失。
值得注意的是,有些外貿英語專業詞彙與其本意大相徑庭。Document本意為「文件」,而在外貿英語中則為「單據」,如An L/C normally specifies the documents that are required by the buyer and the date by which the goods in question must be shipped。(信用證上,通常規定了買方所需的單據,以及有關貨物的運貨日期。)
2.歧義詞:英語中常常會出現一個詞彙有多重意義,而這幾個意義恰好又是對立的。因此在外貿英語信函的書寫或翻譯中,應避免使用歧義詞。面對這類詞彙應及時發現,並立刻和對方取得聯系,以便及時糾正,以免使締約雙方發生分歧,為日後貿易帶來後患。如in a week 可指在within a week(一周內),又可以指after a week(在一周後),這就必須要與對方商榷,及時換上表義明確的詞。
3.英美詞彙差異:外貿英語信函的翻譯還應注意英美詞義的差異:在英式英語和美式英語中,同一個詞可能有不同的含義。在這方面的典型例子即是單位的差異,如billion在美式英語中意思為「十億」,而在英式英語中,則代表「萬億」。因此,在翻譯中一定要注意英式英語和美式英語使用場合。
4.縮略語:縮略術語在外貿英語信函中也很常見,其意思對外貿交易極其重要。這里僅介紹幾種常見的縮略術語的翻譯法。
(1)音譯。如:AIDS艾滋病;DDT滴滴涕;OPEC歐佩克。
(2)用漢語的縮略語譯 如:U FO飛碟;UNESCO聯合國教科文組織;V. F視頻;XL特大。
(3)部分譯,部分不譯如:DNA fingerprintingDNA鑒別術;FOB ShanghaiFOB上海價。
(4)還原成原文意譯 如:Economists placed greater trust in the CPI report, contending that the surge in the wholesale index was merely a fluke。(經濟學家對消費者物價指數比較信任,認為批發物價指數的飊漲只是偶發現象。)( CPT =consumer price index:消費者物價指數)。
(5)外來語譯法與以上方法差不多,以意譯為多。如:EP(單方面)—ex parte(拉丁語);E/ R(在途中)-en route(法語)。
5.套用格式化語言或句型對應翻譯法:以簽署文件、合同等為目的的外貿英語信函,多套用已有格式。在翻譯的時候,應用相應的中文格式,用程式化語言翻譯即可。它的特點主要表現在一些套用、固定搭配及句式結構的應用中。譯者可相應地採取「套用句型對應方法」來翻譯。在此類商業信函中,對方一般也會採取正規書面語,風格繁冗。尤其是為了增加嚴肅、正式的意味,他們常常會選用帶法律、語言保守傾向的古體詞。常見的有以」here; there; where」為詞根的詞,如:herein; hereof; herewith; hereby; thereby; therefore; whereas; whereby等。翻譯的時候不一定要字字對應,可以在其他地方以詞彙手段予以補償,用相對比較古雅的詞彙將原文的文體風格反映出來即可。
6.整體格式差異:整體格式差異主要體現在英文與中文信函中。眾所周知,英文日期常寫於右上方,而中文日期常寫於右下方。英文稱呼使用復數Sirs/Gentlemen ,而在中文中,則體現為統稱形式的整體單數。雖然,按照國際貿易慣例,外貿電函英譯漢時,可保留英文外貿函電的格式,也可套用中文外貿函電的格式。但是,根據慣例,建議使用中文格式,以取得整體美感。
二、用於達成友誼、交流感情的商業信函的翻譯
除用於正式交易的外貿英語信函外,為達成貿易雙方的友誼,商家會特別注意禮貌,因此會大量寫作交流情感類信函。對這一類信函,譯者翻譯的時候,應注意選取適合的詞,使用翻譯具有「信、雅、達」的美感。並且提醒注意的一點是,商人畢竟是商人,他首先考慮的是商品、質量及相關問題與條件,而非客套與人稱,漢譯時,應突出重點信息,精簡繁枝冗葉,以達到強化重點的目的。
針對外貿英語信函所帶有的書面語體的語言結構特點,譯者在翻譯時,應該選擇相應的書面語。在中文外貿信函中,使用的是介於文言文與口語之間的半文言文體與之相對應。如Sincerely yours漢譯為「謹上」即可。而針對港台地區保留大量古語的特點,譯者在翻譯時,還應該把開頭的「先生」之類詞婉譯為「敬啟者」。在傳統英語貿易辭令中,大量套語,更應該恰當增減。如:We are pleased to…;We have pleasure in…;We acknowledge with thanks…這些套語,產生了諸如We are looking forward with interest to your reply.等句式,這里若直譯為「我們帶著極大的興趣盼望您的答復。」顯然,這種翻譯拖沓而且生硬,只要稍微套用一下格式,採取婉譯方式,譯為「盼復」,則簡潔明了。類似的情況還有:Your prompt reply would be greatly appreciated。(直譯為「貴方的快速回復將使我們不勝感激」;婉譯為「即復為謝」)
三、結語
外貿英語信函的重要性在我國的外貿活動中顯得越來越重要。好的外貿英語翻譯可以促進我國的外貿發展。翻譯工作者應該在翻譯和學習的過程中不斷積累各種專業詞彙和縮略語,掌握各種翻譯技巧,針對各種具體情況採用不同的翻譯方法,力求准確,且符合貿易雙方的語言習慣,社會文化習俗。

英文書信的格式
1、 信頭(Heading)
指發信人的姓名(單位名稱)、地址和日期,一般寫在信紙的右上角。一般公函或商業信函的信紙上都印有單位或公司的名稱、地址、電話號碼等,因此就只需在信頭下面的右邊寫上寫信日期就可以了。 英文地址的寫法與中文完全不同,地址的名稱按從小到大的順序:第一行寫門牌號碼和街名;第二行寫縣、市、省、州、郵編、國名;然後再寫日期。標點符號一般在每一行的末尾都不用,但在每一行的之間,該用的還要用,例如在寫日期的時候。
2、 日期的寫法:
如:1997年7月30日,英文為:July 30,1997(最為普遍); July 30th,1997;
30th July,1997等。1997不可寫成97。
3、 信內地址(Inside Address):
在一般的社交信中,信內收信人的地址通常省略,但是在公務信函中不能。將收信人的姓名、地址等寫在信頭日期下方的左角上,要求與對信頭的要求一樣,不必再寫日期。
4、 稱呼(Salutation):
是寫信人對收信人的稱呼用語。位置在信內地址下方一、二行的地方,從該行的頂格寫起,在稱呼後面一般用逗號(英國式),也可以用冒號(美國式)。
(1)寫給親人、親戚和關系密切的朋友時,用Dear或My dear再加上表示親屬關系的稱呼或直稱其名(這里指名字,不是姓氏)。例如:My dear father,Dear Tom等。
(2)寫給公務上的信函用Dear Madam,Dear Sir或Gentleman(Gentlemen)。注意:Dear純屬公務上往來的客氣形式。Gentlemen總是以復數形式出現,前不加Dear,是Dear Sir的復數形式。
(3)寫給收信人的信,也可用頭銜、職位、職稱、學位等再加姓氏或姓氏和名字。例如:Dear Prof. Tim Scales, Dear Dr. John Smith。
5、 正文(Body of the Letter):
位置在下面稱呼語隔一行,是信的核心部分。因此要求正文層次分明、簡單易懂。和中文信不
同的是,正文中一般不用Hello!(你好!)正文有縮進式和齊頭式兩種。每段書信第一行的第一個字母稍微向右縮進些,通常以五個字母為宜,每段第二行從左面頂格寫起,這就是縮進式。但美國人寫信各段落往往不用縮進式,用齊頭式,即每一行都從左面頂格寫起。商務信件大都採用齊頭式的寫法。
6、 結束語(Complimentary Close):
在正文下面的一、二行處,從信紙的中間偏右處開始,第一個詞開頭要大寫,句末用逗號。不同的對象,結束語的寫法也不同。
(1)寫給家人、親戚,用Your loving grandfather,Lovingly yours,Lovingly等;
(2)寫給熟人、朋友,用Yours cordially,Yours affectionately等;
(3)寫業務信函用Truly yours(Yours truly),Faithfully yours(Yours faithfully)等;
(4)對上級、長輩用Yours obediently(Obediently yours),Yours respectfully(Respectfully yours)等。
7、 簽名(Signature) :
低於結束語一至二行,從信紙中間偏右的地方開始,在結束語的正下方,在簽完名字的下面還要有用打字機打出的名字,以便識別。職務、職稱可打在名字的下面。當然,寫給親朋好友的信,就不必再打了。
8、 附言(Postscript) :
一封信寫完了,突然又想起遺漏的事情,這時用P.S.表示,再寫上遺漏的話即可,要長話短說。通常在信末簽名下面幾行的左方,應於正文齊頭。
注意:在正式的信函中,應避免使用附言。
9、 附件(Enclosure) :
信件如果有附件,可在信紙的左下角,註上Encl:或Enc:
例如:Encl:2 photos(內附兩張照片)。如果福建附件不止一項,應寫成Encl:或Encs。
我們有時可看到在稱呼與正文之間有Re:或Subject:(事由)字樣。一般在信紙的中間,也可與「稱呼」對齊。還應在底下加橫線,以引起讀信人的注意,使收信人便於在讀信之前就可了解信中的主要內容。事由一般在公務信函中使用,也可以省略。
