Jane Eyre — A Beautiful Soul
Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:
We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.
We remember her pursuit of justice. It』s like a companion with the goodness. But still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on one side and must check the badness on the other side.
We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the God』s feet. Though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.
We also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence…
When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.
Actually, she wasn』t pretty, and of course, the ordinary appearance didn』t make others feel good of her, even her own aunt felt disgusted with it. And some others even thought that she was easy to look down on and to tease, so when Miss Ingram met Jane Eyre, she seemed quite contemptuous, for that she was obviously much more prettier than 『the plain and ugly governess』. But as the little governess had said: 『Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!』 This is the idea of equality in Jane Eyre』s mind. God hadn』t given her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. Her idea of equality and self-respect impress us so much and let us feel the power inside her body.
In my mind, though a person』s beauty on the face can make others once feel that one is attractive and charming, if his or her mind isn』t the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last for, when others find that the beauty which had charmed them was only a falsity, it』s not true, they will like the person no more. For a long time, only a person』s GREat virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as AN EVERLASTING BEAUTY, just as Kahill Gibran has said, that 『Beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted』. I can feel that how beauty really is, as we are all fleshly men, so we can』t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but fleshly men, so we can』t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.
Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty
我的英文讀後感----《簡愛》As Jane Eyre, in her plainness and solitude, walks to and fro in the Thornfield Hall, her unfortunate childhood, conflicting love, and religious forbiddance all cannot stop her seeking a better life and cherishing the human nature. She broke loose the chains that jailed her spirit, and through her struggles she overcame the poverty, customs, social standards, and piety which all blocked her from her dream of happiness, and finally became the master of herself! It could be said that Jane's life was earned through retaliation and pursuit, that she fought tooth and nail until the sunlight was won. The sunlight now in her palm, shines brightly unto her!
In fact, one has endless thoughts for the most effulgent sunbeam that shines after the storm. I always think in a difficult situation, if and when the hardships of this life is done, if and when the road of time no longer curves, if and when I try my best to walk to the end, will I be able to see the blinding sunlight? For the most important meaning in life is that, struggling through your trials you realize the value of your life, while taking away all the bitter misfortunes. Only then will we see the true radiance of the golden sun...

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.
The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. The punished woman. Hester Prynne and his husband. Who called himself Roger Chillingworth . He is an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester does not love him at all. Another man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time . It is sinful. Due to this,Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame.
In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.
When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will leave her .Hester』s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means 「Able」.
But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. What』s worse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins.
After Mr. Dimmesdale』s death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil.

---Book Review: 「Camille」
I read the Chinese version of 「Camille」 a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. 「Camille」 or 「The Lady of the Camellias」 by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.
However, happiness didn』t last for long. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her ty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her ring her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.
As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to 「wake up and smell the coffee」 and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without 「keeping」 her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.
Last morning, when tiding my bookshelf, I took this book out of the shelf, and a dried flower flew away from the book. Darcy ,who was Bingley 's good friend ,a very proud man who seemed to always feel superior, was fond of Jane』s sister,Elizabeth. But his arrogance behavior and the smear from Wickham led Elizabeth to misunderstand and was biassed against Darcy .
Darcy couldn't restrain himself from loving Elizabeth ,so he proposed to her.But his attitude was still so arrogant ,Elizabeth declined firmly.This hit made Darcy noticed the consequence from proud and conceited for the first time. Leaving a long letter to explain the things around him and Elizabeth, he left her painfully. She felt regret after reading it . Not only feel guilty for misunderstanding of Darcy , but also ashamed for the behavior of her mother.

Thus, their mutual understanding is the foundation of their relationship and will lead them to a peaceful and lasting marriage. This relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance of getting to know one』s partner before marrying. The marriage between Jane Bennet and Bingley is also an example of successful marriage. Jane Austen, through Elizabeth, expresses her opinion of this in the novel.
The last example of a marriage is a of a different nature than the ones mentioned above. The marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is based on economics rather than on love or appearance. It was a common practice ring Austen』s time for women to marry a husband to save herself from spinsterhood or to gain financial security. However, Jane Austen viewed this as a type of prostitution and disapproved of it. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen dramatizes this form of women inequality and show that women who submits themselves to this type of marriage will have to suffer in tormenting silence as Charlotte does.
In Pride and Prejudice, Jane has denounced the elements of marriage and society that she found distasteful. These are the conclusions of her observation of the people in her world. However in her writing, Jane has also reflected her own enjoyment in life among these people with and without their faults.
About my opinions:
Believe it or not,I have readed this story no less times no matter book movie. I readed it again and again,and the more time I read the story is more than a love story I found.
I like this story for the outsdanding characteristic of the characters.
A good book not only can bring you exciting,but also give you some further thingking.From the Pride and Prejudice,I lean a lot.First,it』s stupid to judge a person by the first impression and always have prejudice on the person who you don』t like.In a word,we can』t judge a person without any further reconigse or by other people』s words.Just like Elizabeth,under Wickham』s evil speaking she judge Darcy wad a pround and hatest man and began to have prejudice on him,and kept misunderstanding him.As a reselt,she was failed to see the merists of darcy.Other example,Mr.Binely persuadeed himself run away from falling in love with june for having heard Darcy』s word that June didn』t like him,at least no more deeper than him.This hurted two loved heart.They even almost missed each other. By the way,we can learn that pride sometimes will make you far away from others.You can』t deny that the country people didn』t like Darcy very much no matter how rich he.For,he always feels superior to the country people.And,because Darcy』s pround,he offended the girl he love.
Then, After reading this book, I couldn』t forget how eager Mrs.Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. Most women choose the men who can satisfy their material comforts to be their husbands at that time, just like Charlotte Lucas. She married Mr. Collins although she shared no common interests with him. She didn』t love him while she married him indeed. She persuaded herself to tolerate her husband』s strange and foolish behavior, and her only comfort was her big new house and rich material life. While in my eye, it』s really unfortunate to rest hope on the material comforts for her rest life. Although sometimes it』s necessary to consider the property, position, and background in the marriage, it』s stupit to marry just for the money. Charlotte Lucas married for the possession not love, and on the other hand, Mr. Collins married her because he needed a wife, not for love, either. Their marriage seemed to be necessary but not happy. But how to maintain the marriage without love? Fortunately,I don』t know more them in the end of the book.

Such a tale calls for a top-notch cast, players who can emote the sheer stubbornness which makes Cathy and Heathcliff destroy each other while remaining deeply in love. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), the author of Walden, was born in Concord, Massachusetts. When he was a child, he always went to the woods and field with his old brother. So he loves the nature very much. In the middle of 19th century, American economies developed so rapidly that most people pursuit the material life and ignore the spiritual life. But Thoreau wants to live a simple life. Also for the Transcendentalist Movement was centered in Concord and Emerson had a great influence on him. All these made Thoreau go to build a cabin on the shore of Walden Pond and live alone to close to the nature in 1845. Later, he wrote the famous book, Walden, which mainly talks about his life and thoughts ring he lived alone in the woods near Walden Pond.
When Walden was published in 1854, it was not well accepted by people. Instead it was regarded as "wicked and heathenish" .It was published only one time until Thoreau died of disease. But many years later especially in twentieth century, it was graally known and appreciated by lots of readers all over the world.
This is a book which tells in spring Thoreau starts building a cabin in the woods， thinking about life, reading some books, and listening to the sound of nature. In autumn, he cultivates beans, observes Walden Pond. In winter, the Walden Pond freeze, lots of animals accompanies with him. As spring's coming, the Walden and other ponds melt. Every thing in nature is awake and reborn including Thoreau. After two years, Thoreau leaves.
Thoreau first writes that most people pursuit their necessary things of life such as fashionable clothes, houses and equipment. They pursuit these things while Thoreau go to the woods to building a cabin which only costs $28.12, eating simple food and needing little furniture. So one of chapters in his book, 「Higher Law", emphasizes more on the spiritual aspect instead of the satisfaction of material. Further more; he urges people to read more classic literature such as Homer』s Iliad and Odyssey and other great writers』 masterpiece.
He also writes that though he lives alone in the woods, he is close to nature and makes himself as a part of nature. He lives alone, but sometimes he also talks with his visitors who are honest, sincere, thinkable and loving their life.
Thoreau also mentions that the noise in the town and the whistle of train disturb the quite life of the town. However, in the woods life is quite. When he lives in the woods, he can listen to animals' sounds such as bird's singing, owl』s hooting, cockerel』s crowing etc. He lives with animals friendly. He also describes the Walden Pond. The water, blue and green, clear and pure, freezes in winter and melts in spring.

One of Thoreau's thoughts about solitude attracts me deeply for I』m the person who likes to be alone. 作者簡介
丹尼爾・笛福， 1660年生於英國，父親是倫敦的一名商人。
1674年，年輕的笛福就開始學習當一名牧師。但他並不適合牧師這種工作，因為，正如他所創造出來的英雄魯賓孫一樣，他的生活充滿了冒險與刺激。1683年，笛福曾被海盜俘虜過。這次的經歷，再加上一名曾經在海上遇難的蘇格蘭水手的敘述，提供了笛福寫作《魯賓孫漂流記》這部膾炙人口的小說題材。雖然《魯賓孫漂流記》一直到笛福將近六十歲時才出版，它依然為笛福帶來歷久不衰的聲譽。還為笛福帶來歷久不表的聲譽。繼《魯賓孫漂流記》的成功之後，接下來的五年之中，笛福又陸續寫了四本書，包括《生命》、《冒險》、《紅牌船長的海盜生涯》及《疫年大事記》。笛福逝世於1731年4月，享年70歲。
寫作背景
這部小說是笛福受當時一個真實故事的啟發而創作的。1704年蘇格蘭水手賽爾科克在海上與船長發生爭吵，被船長遺棄在荒島上，四年後被救回英國。賽爾科克在荒島上並沒有作出什麼值得頌揚的英雄事跡。但笛福塑造的魯濱孫卻完全是個新人，成了當時中小資產階級心目中的英雄人物，是西方文學中第一個理想化的新興資產者形象。他表現了強烈的資產階級進取精神和啟蒙意識。
