1 If a foreign friend comes to China, I would suggest he/she pays a visit to those beautiful tourist spots, depending on the length of his/her stay here. If he/she stays for, say 3-5 days, in Beijing for example, he can visit the Tian'anmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace, etc. One thing a foreigner should not hesitate to do here in China is to taste our delicious and various cuisines from all over the country. But I will remind him not to forget to ask about the materials and ingredients of each cuisine, for some of the cuisines are made of peculiar materials that foreigners cannot accept.
As for the things that a foeigner cannot do in China, I really cannot think of many points since China is already a quite open country. But one thing I think it's good to let my foreign friend know is that he/she should be cautious about attendding any political meeting or assembly and think twice before he say something that he knows is not welcomed here.
2 Personally, I'm for extensive travel and I do think students should travel ring their holidays if they don't have anything more important to do.
The advantages of extensive travel vary denpending on different people. For me, it gives me an opportunity to discover a world partly or totally different from what i am accustomed to. I get to meet different people, know different cultures and of course, see different sceneries. This experience broadens my mind and enables me to realize, this world is so big and full of varieties. Each of these varieties needs my understanding and deserves my respect. This is one of the ways a young person learns how to be patient and tolerant.
The disadvantages of extensive travel, from my view point, is that it's energy and money consuming. I need a good rest after an extensive travel. It's not as people often think a good rest from work or study. One last point I would make is, extensive travel is not suitable for any student. Some students lack the ability to feel or discover the abundantness of another culture thus extensive travel ends to be a waste of money and time.
I can only say maybe mankind can achieve that balance when they better know themselves from a philosophical sense, answer those ultimate questions like where I'm from and where I'm to go, what I want and what I can give up for what I want.
