在外國學英語，最有趣的大概就是可以聽到很多俚語。 很多時候光聽那些句子, 好像不容易馬上可以會意出來他們在說什麼, 聽了幾次後, 就慢慢可以了解這些俚語的含意了。不過, 不管什麼語言, 都應該考慮到說話的對象、場合與時間, 有些俚語並不適合在正式的場合用。
俚語的主要特徵：
俚語的第一個特徵是幽默風趣。例如,green hand被稱為"新手";Play hooky指"逃學";black sheep是"搗蛋鬼";"拍馬屁"被稱作Apple-polishing;"愛睡覺的人"被喻為sleepy head等等。又譬如,用Braindrain表示"人才外流";Knockout表示"傑出人或物";此類俚語既新奇又生動形象,聽來趣味橫生,富有幽默感,令人耳目一新,所以,立即會被許多人津津樂道和廣為使用。
俚語的第二個特徵是更新速度快。這是因為大多數俚語詞追求新穎,所以必須不斷翻新,以保持其新穎。舉個例子:當你走在倫敦的大街上,如果看到No Fly Tipping的標牌時,您可千萬別誤以為是"別給小費"的意思,那樣就要鬧笑話了。它是英語中的一個俚語,意思是"不要隨便扔垃圾"。Tipping在英語中是"倒垃圾"的一種古老的說法,大約在1838年開始被使用。根據牛津英語字典的解釋:tipping是指"把卡車里的垃圾倒空"。後來就泛指所有的垃圾處理。在片語no fly tipping里,大家知道fly的本意和飛行有關。自從19世紀,它在俚語中就逐漸引申為"聰明"的意思,可近來它的詞義又發生了轉變,表示"不誠實"或"鬼鬼祟祟"。所以,fly tipping就變成了"鬼鬼祟祟地丟垃圾"了。這就是no fly tipping(不要隨便扔垃圾)的來歷了。

最好區分的是俗語。 俗語，也稱常言，俗話，這三者應該是同義詞。俗語一詞，已經普遍用作語言學的術語；常言一詞，帶有文言的色彩；俗話一詞，則有口語的氣息。
【俗語】
俗語是熟語之一，指約定俗成，廣泛流行，且形象精練的語句。從廣義來看，俗語包括諺語、歇後語（引注語）、慣用語和口頭上常用的成語，但不包括方言詞、俗語詞、書面語中的成語，或名著中的名言警句；從狹義來看，俗語是具有自己特點的語類之一，不同於諺語、歇後語，但一些俗語介乎幾者之間。俗語來源很廣，既來自人民群眾的口頭創作，也和詩文名句、格言警語、歷史典故等有關連。
例如：
飽漢不知餓漢飢

可以看出，它們的特點就是：短小、精煉、形象、廣泛流行、符合事物規律。
【口語】
含義：日常口頭交談時使用的語言(區別於「書面語」)
口語靈活多變，多因場合與發言者不同而被自由使用。因為發言者與聽者同在現場，有時這種發揮不但不影響聽者理解，反能更生動地體現發言者心態，或使語言簡潔化。
經過一段時間後口語和書面語差別就有加劇的趨向，原因是口語不斷隨時間與地方而變化，而書面語相對穩定。經過教育的人會從書面語學習採納嚴謹的語法用於口語，而書面語經過一段時間後也需要改變以適應口語的變化，否則懂書面語的人會越來越少。語言學家從書面語文獻和現代口語的差別中可以研究語言的歷史發展變化。
始終有些口語表述很難應用於書面，因為它們只要在場雙方理解就好，缺乏一個既定標准，甚至連對應字詞都沒有（僅僅有既定發音）。或者，由於口語結構相對散亂，如又缺乏語言環境，可能造成歧義與費解。因此，越正規的場合，人們越喜歡使用書面化的語言。
口語的特點：不夠正式、常用語口頭交談、與「書面語」相對。
【俚語】
是極不正式的非標准詞彙，通常並不限定使用地區。俚語包括新造的字詞、簡化的形式，或者是戲謔式地使用某些標准字詞。
俚語通常來自某些群體常用的詞彙：
切口，某些年齡階層、族群、職業團體或其他群體(如大學生、爵士樂手)慣用或索性自己造出的字詞；
行話，職業用語或某一行業的專門術語；
暗語，盜賊或其他罪犯傳遞秘密信息時所使用的切口或行話。
被大眾所接受的、介於標准語及非正式語詞之間的俚語，以及一些次級團體所慣用的特殊字詞，經常為後者范疇內的字詞發揮了一種測試平台的作用。許多俚語已被證明為有用，而被接受為標准語或非正式語，至於另外一些就標准語而言，還是太過時髦了些。
