公元前 2000 年左右，中國人發明了風箏。

公元 9～23
年，在中國的王莽時代，相傳已有人用大鳥羽毛製成翅膀，渾身貼上羽毛，利用機關（即機械結構），「飛數百步」遠。據說是此舉是為窺視匈奴的動態，從一高塔上躍下進行了滑翔飛行。
大概也是在這個時代，義大利一名演員扇動 2 具鳥翅嘗試飛行，結果失敗而身亡。

年間，在中國東漢時期，著名發明家張衡造出可飛行的木鳥，這相當於原始的飛機模型。
265～316
年間，中國晉朝的葛洪發現了鳥不扇動翅膀也能滑翔的現象，首次解釋了老鷹展翅高飛是藉助了上升氣流的托舉原理。
265～420 年間，中國晉朝發明了竹蜻蜓，被世界公認為直升機的最原始形態。

年，風箏首次用於軍事行動，當時中國南朝梁的首都金陵被困，太子肖綱與大臣羊侃利用紙風箏升空告急，將昭書放飛送出城郭，可惜被敵軍射下。
559 年，相傳在中國北朝時，北齊一個叫作「黃頭兒」的人曾乘風箏逃命成功。
618～907
年間，中國唐朝士兵韓志和製成一木鳥，可飛「三丈高，二百步遠」，其腹內設有「機關」（指驅動機械），成為古代飛行比較成功的一具航空模型。
782 年，中國唐朝臨洛守將張丕被田悅圍攻時，曾放出風箏升高
「百餘丈」，向外界求救，終於使援軍趕到。
