任何一艘橫渡太平洋的船舶經常會一連好幾天有那種較小的信天翁伴航。這些信天翁能陪伴著船飛行一小時之久而看不出翅膀有什麼動作，或者只是偶爾揮動一下。信天翁在滑翔飛行的鳥類中首屈一指。這類鳥能夠駕馭空氣，使之為自己的目的服務，但是在空氣的阻力面前又不得不屈服。野鴨、鴿子、鷓鴣等則是以另一種方式飛行的鳥類。它們具有堅強如鋼的肌肉，以勢不可擋的力量使勁扇動短小的翅膀，在精疲力盡之前可以在迎面吹來的大風中頂風飛行很長的距離；但是，一旦精力耗盡了，它們也就飛不動了。如果海面上的風迫使它們作了長途旅行，你可以從地上拾起那些再也飛不動的野鴨、鴿子。燕子充分把這兩大類鳥的飛行優點兼而有之。它不會疲倦，也不會誇耀自己的力量。它是天生的空中之物，從這里飛往北方營建家園，又從那裡飛回來，一路上可能飛行幾千公里，並且沿途喂著它們已經會飛的雛燕。

古時候，橄欖壩人的祖先一直過著流浪的生活，他們多想找一塊富饒美麗的土地，過上安定幸福的日子啊！
一天，突然從天上傳來一陣叫聲：「到橄欖壩去吧，那裡會讓你們過上幸福的日子！」
大家抬頭一看，原來是一隻綠孔雀。綠孔雀說完，就展翅向遠處飛去。人們歡歡喜喜地跟著綠孔雀向前跑。
跑啊，跑啊，歷盡了艱難困苦，終於到了一個大壩子。但是，那裡到處都是沼澤，成群的蚊子黑壓壓地飛來飛去，毒蛇纏在樹上吐著芯子。有的人看了，說：「綠孔雀不是騙大家嗎？」
但是一些堅強的人留下來了，決心用自己的雙手來建設橄欖壩。
一年年過去了，橄欖壩變了樣。一片片整齊的竹樓；竹樓周圍是數不清的竹叢和果樹，有芒果、木瓜、荔枝、椰子、柚子、芭蕉……一樹樹、一枝枝掛滿了累累果實；遠處是蔥郁的樹林、成群的牲畜、金黃的稻田……到處是欣欣向榮的景象。
綠孔雀沒有騙人。
後來這個寨子就起名叫綠孔雀寨。
