From ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN
15
We judged that three nights more Would fetch us to Cairo, 1at
the bottom of Illinois, where the Ohio River comes in, andthat was
what we was after. We would sell the raft and get on a steamboat
and go way up the Ohio amongst the free States, and then be out of
trouble.2
Well, the second night a fog begun to come on, and we made for
a tow-head to tie to, for it wouldn't do to try to run in fog;
but when I paddled ahead i n the canoe, with the line, to make fast,
there warn't anything but little saplings totie to.I passed the
line around one of them right on the edge of the cut bank, but there
was a stiff current, and the raft come booming down so lively she
tore it out by the roots and away she went.I see the fog closing
down, and it made meso sick and scared I couldn't budge for most
a half a minuteit seemed to me—and then there warn't no raft in
sight;you couldn't see twenty yards.3 I jumped into the canoe
and runback to the stern and grabbed the paddle and set her back a
stroke.But she didn't come, I was in such a hurry Ihadn't untied
her.I got up and tried to untie her, but I was so excited my hands
shook so I couldn't hardly do anything with them.
As soon as I got started I took out after the raft, hot and heavy,
right down the tow-head.4 That was all right as far asit went,
but the tow-head warn't sixty yards long, and theminute I flew by
the foot of it I shot out into the solid whitefog, and hadn't no
more idea which way I was going than adead man.
Thinks I, it won't do to paddle;first I know I'll run intothe
bank or a tow-head or something;I got to set still andfloat, and
yet it's mighty fidgety business to have to hold yourhands still
at such a time.I whooped and listened.Away downthere, somewheres,
I hears a small whoop, and up comes myspirits.I went tearing after
it, listening sharp to hear it again. The next time it come, I see
I warn't heading for it but head-ing away to the right of it.And
the next time, I was head-ing away to the left of it—and not gaining
on it much, either, for I was flying around, this way and that and
'tother, 5but it was going straight ahead all the time.
I did wish the fool would think to beat a tin pan, and beatit
all the time, but he never did, and it was the still placesbetween
the whoops that was making the trouble for me.Well, I fought along,
and directly I hears the whoops behind me.Iwas tangled good,
now.That was somebody else's whoop.orelse I was turned around.
I throwed the paddle down.I heard the whoop again;itwas behind me yet, but in a different place;it kept coming,
and kept changing its place, and I kept answering, till by-and-by
it was in front of me again and I knowed the current hadswung the
canoe's head down stream and I was all right, ifthat was Jim and
not some other raftsman hollering.I could-n't tell nothing about
voices in a fog, for nothing don't looknatural nor sound natural
in a fog.
The whooping went on, and in about a minute I come a booming
down on a cut bank6 with smoky ghosts of big treeson it, and the
current throwed me off to the left and shot by, amongst a lot of
snags that fairly roared, the current was tear-ing by them so swift.
In another second or two it was solid white and still again.I
set perfectly still, then, listening to my heart thump, and Ireckon
I didn't draw a breath while it thumped a hundred.
I just give up, then.I knowed what the matter was.Thatcut
bank was an island, and Jim had gone down 'tother sideof it.It
warn't no tow-head, that you could float by in tenminutes. It had
the big timber of a regular island;it mightbe five or six mile
long and more than a half a mile wide.
I kept quiet, with my ears cocked, about fifteen minutes,
Ireckon.I was floating along, of course, four or five mile anhour;
but you don't ever think of that. No, you feel like youare laying
dead still on the water;and if a little glimpse of a snap slips
by, you don't think to yourself how fast you're go-ing, but you
catch your breath and think my!how that snag'stearing along.lf
you think it ain't dismal and lonesome outin a fog that way, by
yourself, in the night, you try it once— you'll see.
Next, for about a half an hour, I whoops now and then;atlast
I hears the answer a loog ways off, and tries to follow it, but
I couldn't do it, and directly I judged I'd got into a nestof
towheads, for I had little dim glimpses of them on bothsides of
me, sometimes just a narrow channel between;andsome that I couldn't
see, I knowed was there, because I'd hearthe wash of the current
against the old dead brush and trashthat hung over the banks.Well,
I warn't long losing thewhoops, down amongst the towheads;and I
only tried to chasethem a little while, anyway, because it was worse
than chas-ing a Jack-o-lantern.You never knowed a sound dodge
aroundso, and swap places so quick and so much.
The Importance of Reading Classics
It is widely acknowledged that reading classics is both important and beneficial to the character development and personal growth of the young people. As for me, nothing can bring more joy and happiness than reading those masterpieces created by great figures like Confucius and Cao Xueqin. I believe works like The Dream in the Red Chamber and The Legend of Three Kingdoms can drastically elevate one's aesthetic taste and deepen the understanding of the glorious history of Chinese culture.
However, the modern society is full of temptations. Compared with TV soap operas, sport events, and video games, classical literary works are old fashioned and time consuming. In bookstores, 「Fast-food」 reading materials are replacing classics, and young writers with sensational and 「cool」 remarks win the support of a large number of fans.
we college students should be fully aware of the important role the classics play in broadening one's vision. Therefore, we should start reading and studying the treasuries our ancestors center and absorbing the essence of those classical works. We should also advocate to the public the importance of classics so that an increasing number of general people can enjoy the pleasure of reading

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don』t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

Robinson Crusoe is one of the world's most popular adventure novels. Daniel Defoe based his classic tale of shipwreck and survival on an uninhabited island, which is based on a true story. The real Robinson Crusoe was a Scotsman named Alexander Selkirk Born in 1676, when Selkirk was 19 years old he was cited for indecent conct in church. Then he ran off to sea. That was in 1695. By 1703 he was the sailing master of a galley. The following year he joined a pirate expedition to the Pacific Ocean that was led by Capt. William Dampier. Selkirk's ship had Thomas Straddling as its captain.
After spending some time in the Pacific, they were preparing to return to England with their booty. Their ship had suffered considerable damage in battle and Selkirk felt they needed to repair her before setting off around the Horn. The captain disagreed. After an argument, Selkirk refused to go any farther and demanded he be set ashore on the Island of Juan Fernandez, which was about 400 miles off the coast of Chile. The captain was glad to do this.
There is no denying that people can get a lot benefits from reading classics. On the one hand, it is a good way for readers to broaden their horizon and increase their knowledge in many aspects. For instance, they can learn the society characters by reading classic literature novels about history or culture. On the other hand, it also provides a chance for them to enhance their aesthetic taste in that most of classics has a very beautiful or unique language style and arts, which gives readers more enjoyment and interest.
However, nowadays a large number of people, especially the young, are unwilling to or cannot spend their times in reading classics. There are some reasons accounting for the phenomenon and I would like to state two of them. For one thing, people are distracted by other things increasingly, which can give their more joy and fun and have no requirement in thinking, such as all kinds of entertainment activities. For another, some people think that it is no use of reading classics because these classics are outdated and useless to our society and lives.
In my opinion, it is wrong to consider classics as an outdated matter because it still has many important functions and influence on our society and our lives. Classics are a kind of treasure in a nation. Therefore, we should give enough attention to them.
1
My hobby is reading. I read story books, magazines, newspapers and any kind of material that I find interesting. This hobby got started when I was a little boy. I had always wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to me. Soon they got fed up and tired of having to read to me continually. So as soon as I could, I learned to read. Soon I could read simple fairy tales and other stories. Now I read just about anything that is available. Reading enables me to learn about so many things that I would otherwise not know. I learned about how people lived in bygone days of magic and mystery. I learned about the wonders of the world, space travel, human achievements, gigantic whales, tiny viruses and other fascinating things of our world. Books provide the reader with so much information and facts. They have certainly helped me in my daily life. I am better equipped to cope with living. Otherwise I would go about ignorantly learning things the hard way. So I continue to read. Besides being more informed about the world, I also spend my time profitably. It is indeed a good hobby.

I want to introce the book is Hemingway's the old man and the sea, I think this book is very worth a look, especially in the ownership of the "tough guy" spirit is worth us to learn.
The old man and the sea is the background of the story leaves of Cuba in the 20th century. Protagonist is an old fisherman San Diego in a supporting role is a named manolin's child. The old man and the sea is written by an old fisherman fishing in the sea for three days and three nights. Old man in the face of many difficulties, life, other fishermen laugh at, only a small boy to send him food. The old man decided to go to fisherman who has never been to the deep sea fishing, to prove your ability and courage. At sea, the old man caught a salmon, but the fish is too big, the old man made countless efforts finally put the fish in the boat, because of that, that caused the tragedy, the fish's blood attracted many shark, the old man was determined, "fight with them, I'll talk to them all to death" finally, went back to the shore, the old man in the boat only strapped to her bones.
"People are not born for defeat, a man can be destroyed, but can't defeat". Lonely old fisherman San Diego resolute character, superb fishing technique, etc. The outline of his article is not only a tough guy, also saw a variety of different from him, let the person ponder: self-confident, brave, optimistic, simple, lonely, and wise. Old fisherman of this spirit is worth us to learn, to mining. The children from the age of five with the old fishing boat learning, the child's personality traits from another side, reflect the old man's character, showed that kind of not afraid of hard, have the courage to overcome difficulties of character; Child is small, only a few years old, but it doesn't show very childish; Learned from the old man is not only the skill of fishing, and self-esteem self-improvement of the spirit, and learn to understand the hardships of life with the man's responsibility. Tender shoulder has already accustomed to the morning go out fishing life of hone, even "walk still dozing", still said "this consider as what, a man have to like this." Fist-pumping, be born words fully demonstrates the sound always tough spirit. This spirit is worth us to learn, also let I was moved very much.
To what struck me most is the spirit, the old fisherman manolin kid the sort of understand, in life, in learning, or in the later work, when we encounter unprecedented hardships and setbacks, we should consider the alone on the sea and unable to fight the "tough guy" old fisherman, the children of that kind of sensible and self-esteem self-improvement, like him after the life of hone. In this way, we will find that in fact there are a lot of difficulties and not imagined so invincible. If we are to study the spirit, and has the "tough guy" spirit, inspire our biggest potential, can overcome we think it is impossible to overcome the difficulties.
