From a plane we can see the fields, cities, mountains or seas below. If we go into space, we see more and more of the earth. People and man-made satellites have been sent out into space to look at the earth carefully and people have learnt more about the earth in the last few years.
The sea looks very beautiful when the sun is shining on it. But it can be very terrible when there is a strong wind.
The sea is very big. It nearly covers three quarters of the earth. The sea is also very deep in some places. There is one place and at that place the sea is about 11 kilometres deep. The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometres high. If that mountain was put into the sea at that place, there would be still 2 kilometres of water above it!
In most parts of the sea, there are many kinds of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea. Others live deep down. There are also a lot of small living things, and lots of fishes live by eating them.
The sea can be very cold. When people go down, the sea becomes colder and colder. Only some men can go down into the deep sea. But, in 1970, five women scientists (科學家) lived in the deep sea for fourteen days.

B
I left home for New Zealand to start my new life on my 15th birthday.
My father and mother took me to Hong Kong, where we had to say goodbye. When we were saying goodbye, I suddenly felt afraid that I had never had before.
This was the first time I had traveled so far by myself. And going to a far-away place I have never been before made me feel terrible. I held back my tears until I could no longer see my parents. As I was wiping away(擦去)my tears, I realized(意識到)that, from that moment on, I would have to do everything by myself.
After my arrival in Wellington, my teacher, Ms. Lang, showed me around my new school.
A few days later, I started having classes. There were only 20 students in each class.
Only maths, science, social studies(社會學)and English were compulsory, and students could choose other subjects for themselves, I chose music, Japanese and health.
In New Zealand, students are very active in class. And teachers are not as serious(嚴肅的). They often let us play games in class. We can sit with anyone we like, and the teacher can sit at her own desk or at a student』s desk. The school had an easy manner, with few rules.
Because there was no homework, we could join clubs(俱樂部)or do anything we liked. I always went to the library after school, where I found a lot of books to help with my studies.
Studying in New Zealand is very different from studying in China. In New Zealand, students depend on(依靠)the library to gain knowledge instead of waiting for what teachers ask them to do.
Time went fast. The two months after I arrived flew by. Then a week of exams began.
I did not have to take these exams, because I had only been at the school for a short time. However, my maths teacher encouraged(鼓勵)me to take the maths exam, as she thought I could do well.
Though there wasn』t much pressure(壓力)on me, I worked very hard to get ready for the exam because I know that no pain means no gain(收獲).
When the day of the exam came, I found that I finished the paper faster than the other students. One week later, my teacher told the whole class who had got the top mark: It was me! I got 94 percent.
All my classmates were very happy and said congratulations to me. It was one of the happiest days of my life.

Mr King wanted to help them. He remembered that Room 418, a very small room, was empty. He asked them if they would share a room. The three men said they would. Mr King said the room would be thirty dollars: ten for each one. Each man gave him the money and then went up to the room.
Mr King soon began to feel sorry. "Thirty dollars is a lot to ask as price for that small room. " he thought. He called his assistant over and said, "Here is five dollars. Take it to the men in Room 418. I asked too much for their room."
The assistant took the money. While he was on the way there, he started to think, "How can three men divide(分)five dollars? I'll give them each only one dollar and keep the two dollars for myself. Ⅱ 初中英語閱讀理解試題(含答案和解釋)

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his CF & thr 3:-@ kids FTF ILNY, its gr8.
Can you understand this sentence? If you can't, don't feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the "translation" of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it's great.
Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming(破壞) English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes cxan be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists(語言學家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. "People get better at writing by writing," he says, "Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents."
Linguist James Millroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today's teenagers become tomorrow's parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become "corrupted"; they simply change to meet the new needs.
However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Cynthia McVey says, "I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it's important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must for their future."
Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, "I wouldn't use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun"
1. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To give an example of a foreign language.
B. To show an example of creative methods.
C. To express worries about using Netspeak.
D. To lead in the topic of Netspeak.
2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Cynthia McVey points out teenagers can deal with Netspeak properly.
B. Geoffrey Nunberg believes Netspeakers can write Standard English.
C. David Crystal thinks Netspeak helps develop the habit of writing.
D. James Milroy says that language is changing and improving.
3. The expression "bet your bottom dollar" in Paragraph 5 means ______.
A. be fairly sure B. be greatly surprised
C. think it a pity D. find it interesting
答案:A
4. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Netspeak: A Widely-Used Language on Internet
B. Is Netspeak Harming the English Language?
C. Is Netspeak Helpful in Language Learning?
D. Netspeak: Advantages and Disadvantages

Tropical cyclones (熱帶旋風) are called typhoons (台風) in Asia, and hurricanes (颶風) in North and South America. These storms go around like a wheel(輪子) turning to the left. They have wind speeds of 60 kph or more. They can be very destructive In the United States, the Tropical Prediction Centre in Miami, Florida, looks out for hurricanes.
When scientists discover a true hurricane, they give it a name. They can use either a man's or woman's name. Why should hurricanes have names? The names make it easier for people to keep up with information about a hurricane and its dangers.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an international weather group, decides what names will be used. The WMO makes six lists (列表) of names, using the English alphabet. Each list is used for one year. When a hurricane happens, it gets the next name on the list for that year. For example, the first hurricane of the year might have the name Abel, while the second one could be Betty. The name lists do not include (包含) names beginning with the letters O, U, X, Y, and Z, since there are few names that begin with these letters. Asian countries use a different list. This list has a few personal names, but most of the names are of flowers, animals and trees.

56. Why should hurricans have names?

A. It sounds interesting.

B. The names help people get information about a hurricane.

C. The names are only for the WMO.

D. It is traditional.

57. _________ decides what names will be used for hurricanes.

C. The WMO D. Abel

58. Which name would a hurricane never have?

59. The Fifth hurricane of 2010 might have the name ________.

DJs (disc jockeys) are the people who play and present music on the radio, or in a nightclub. A VJ (video jockey) is a person who introces music videos on television.

VJs were first seen on television in the early 1980s when MTV went on the air. As MTV became popular and the audience for music videos increased, different kinds of music video channels started broadcasting. By the 1990s, international music video channels like Channel V in Asia and VIVA in Europe had started.

The VJs for the new international stations had to be chosen carefully. Although some VJs showed mostly local content (本地內容), other VJs presented shows for international viewers (電視觀眾). These VJs, and the material (素材) they presented, needed to be popular in several different cultures.

One successful international VJ in Asia is Asha Gill. She is from Malaysia, but her parents and grandparents are from India, France, and England. She speaks three languages and has fans across Asia.

When asked what makes a good VJ, many successful VJs have given similar answers. To be a good VJ you need to know a lot about music, you need to be funny, and you can't be shy.

They had their own school, bowling area, and movie theatre. She especially loved it when her dad would come home each day and greet her with a new joke and tickles (搔癢).

When her mum and dad came out of the other room, mum was crying. Dad sat down and began to explain that he has been told to go to Iraq to help with the war effort. Casey was so surprised that she couldn't speak for a moment. She began to feel tears in her eyes.

Soon, the day came. Her dad was leaving. It was hard for Casey to believe that she wouldn't be seeing her dad for a whole year. They depended on (依賴) him for so many things.
