In this modern materialistic world, the majority of people are in hot pursuit of material gains, and money is considered the most valuable thing of all, which, personally speaking, is quite superficial. As far as I am concerned, reading is much more valuable than anything else, for it can benefit us in many ways. The old saying, 「to open a book is always beneficial」 vividly shows how valuable reading is.
Firstly, it goes beyond doubt that reading is a very important way to gain knowledge. Reading is like travelling, the process of which enables you to experience the colorful world and enlarge your eyes scope. By reading history books, you can understand how a regime prospers or collapses, helping you draw useful lessons and develop more wisdom. By reading books of science, you can keep yourself informed in the field of scientific endeavors, thus appreciating how science creates wonders. In a word, reading can enrich your knowledge and get whatever information you need.
In addition, you can get mental encouragement from reading and improve yourself in all aspects. For instance, the stories of well-known people in books help turn an aimless person into an ambitious one, setting up a short or long-term goal for himself. If the daily troubles make you feel desperate, then you will be mentally stroked and encouraged by reading how famous people such as Beethoven made miracles in the face of insurmountable difficulties. Books are a great source of mental encouragement, giving you motives to move forward.
Finally, reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our joy when we are in high spirits, and lessens our sorrow when we are discouraged. Reading will always bring us enjoyment and satisfaction. Good books also serve as gentle companions or faithful friends that will never betray us. While reading, we don』t feel lonely. Books are ready to give us whatever we need such as knowledge, friendship and encouragement.
To sum up, reading is undoubtedly beneficial to you. To open a book is like opening a door, through which you will enter a museum, where all man-made wonders and unique wisdoms are available for you to appreciate; to open a book is like opening a window, through which you can enjoy fresh air、blue sky and wonderful natural landscapes , making you feel refreshed .

In spite of 「endless talk of difference,」American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. There is 「the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourse, and the casualness and absence of consumption 「launched by the 19th——century department stores that offered 「vast arrays of goods in an elegant atmosphere. Instead of intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite. 「these were stores 「anyone could enter, regardless of class or background. This turned shopping into a public and democratic act. 「The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization. Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. Writing for the National Immigration Forum, Gregory Rodriguez reports that today』s immigration is neither at unprecedented level nor resistant to assimilation. In 1998 immigrants were 9.8 percent of population; in 1900, 13.6 percent .In the 10 years prior to 1990, 3.1 immigrants arrived for every 1,000 residents; in the 10years prior to 1890, 9.2 for every 1,000. Now, consider three indices of assimilation–language, home ownership and intermarriage.
The 1990 Census revealed that 「a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English『well』or『very well』after ten years of residence. 「The children of immigrants tend to be bilingual and proficient in English. 「By the third generation, the original language is lost in the majority of immigrant families. 「Hence the description of America as a「graveyard」for languages. By 1996 foreign–born immigrants who had arrived before 1970 had a homeownership rate of 75.6 percent, higher than the 69.8 percent rate among native-born Americans.
Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics 「have higher rates of intermarriage than do U.S–born whites and blacks. 「By the third generation, one third of Hispanic women are married to non-Hispanics, and 41 percent of Asian–American women are married to non-Asians.
Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet 「some Americans fear that immigrant living within the United States remain somehow immune to the nation』s assimilative power.」
Are there divisive issues and pockets of seething anger in America? Indeed. It is big enough to have a bit of everything. But particularly when viewed against America『s turbulent past, today』s social inces hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environment.

1.Learning:A Lifelong Career【
As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inexhaustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and an infallible warrant of success in times of uncertainty.
Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sapping our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.
2.heavy shoolwork【
In my opinion, the schoolwork now being assigned to high school students is too heavy. While it is true that students need to study, they need other things as well if they are to grow into healthy and well-rounded alts. High should be allowed more time for play. Plying is not wasting time, as some think. It gives them physical exercise, and also exercise their imagination. Which tends to be stifled by too much study. Finally, the pressure put on high school students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally. I do not advocate the elimination of schoolwork. I do think, however, that a rection of the current heavy load would be beneficial to students and to the society as a whole.
3.Time【時間】
Lost time is never found again. This is something which I learned very clearly last semester. I spent so much time fooling around that my grades began to suffer. I finally realized that something had to be done. It was time for a change.
Now I have a new plan for using my time wisely. I have set my alarm clock ahead half an hour. This will give me a head start on the day. I have also decided to keep a log of what I do and when I do it. Looking back on what I』ve done will give me some ideas on how to reorganize my time.
4.Work and Play【
Work and play do not contradict each other; in fact, they complement each other. As the saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a ll boy." A life burdened with work leads you nowhere, for you would get tired and bored with your daily routine work. On the other hand, proper recreation will relieve the tension and discomfort of our monotonous life because it offers you various ways to let out your pent-up emotions.
What I usually do to relax after school is jogging and seeing movies. Usually I don't spare time for exercise, but I value the physical ecation class at school. Jogging several rounds in the field certainly relieves the day's pressure. On weekends, I'll catch the morning movie for my visual enjoyment. I feel revived and energetic for another week's work-load.
5.My first Job【
My first job was at a cramming school. It was three years ago when I just graated from junior high school and finished the entrance examination. since I had nothing to do that summer, I decided to find a job, tasting the joy of independence.
I was responsible for answering the telephone and taking the message. I worked eight hours a day, six days a week. The work was not difficult nor heavy to me and I guess I did well. The most delighted thing was perhaps that I could spend the money I earned all by myself.
6.My Favorite Sports【
Sports help everyone to keep healthy, happy, and efficient. So I pay special attention to games, especially table-tennis. Table tennis is my favorite game. I play it almost every day.
Table-tennis is an ideal game us because it brings the whole body into action. It strengthens our muscles, expands our lungs, promotes the circulation of the blood, and causes a healthy action of the skin. Besides, it is very amusing and does not cost us much money. Table-tennis is very moderate; it is not so rough as football. It is an indoor game and can be played even on rainy days. Thus, it is my favorite kind of exercise.

However I am not used to your way of teaching. you always speak English in the class, which is different from the way in middle school. I hope you could explain more about the new words you often use ring this period of time. I think it will be a great help for me. Thanks.

Youth
Youth is not entirely a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means the temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite of adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than in a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair-these bow the heart and turn the spirit back to st.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and the star like things, the undaunted challedge of events, the unfailing child-like appetite for what-next, and the joy of the game of living. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your faithm as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.
In the central place of your heart there is a wireless station, so long as it receives message of beauty, hope, courage, grandeur and power from the earth, from man and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the wires are all down, and all the central places of your heart are covered with the central places of your heart are covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then, and only then, are you grown old indeed.

He may be still young, but look out world! He may surprise you! If you ask around, many would say that the music world has a new leader - the real king is Jay chou. As a child, Jay chou was never too good at academic subjects, and when he didn't get into any college, a lot of people predicted that he won't have much potential in life. His mom always worried about his future, but he never did. "I knew I still had music to depend on. For everything else, I've had too much confidence, but it is for my musical talent that I'm so sure of myself," he recalls. Growing up in a single-parent family, Jay lived a solitary childhood. Without many friends, he had a hobby of daydreaming, fantasizing into his world of music.
So how did Jay get into music? At the age of three, he started learning to play the piano. He recalls his mother being very strict, to make sure he practiced sufficiently. Later, he learned to play the cello. Today, both are two instruments that he plays with superior dexterity.
With all the musical talent, it isn't surprising that Jay started out as a songwriter. Since the age of sixteen, he has been writing songs for many of the most popular singers. Today, he has already written for some of the most popular Asian singers, including Coco Lee, Jacky Wu, Valen Hsu, Power Station, etc.
It was only in 2000 that Jay released his own debut album "Jay", with the main style being R & B / rap. Singer/actress Vivian Hsu wrote the lyrics to three of the songs in the album: Cute Woman, Istanbul, and Tornado. Jay's soft and smooth voice is especially soothing and serene, making this first album an immediate hit. Each song in the album has its own, different style, and skillfully, Jay used his voice to suit each song's character.
Lyrics are an element that cannot be neglected. Lyrics of Jay's songs all have a unique touch. In his song "Dad, I am Back", the subject is a broken family. "I heard that after war, there is peace. Why do I always see my dad beating my mom? Since I was young, you told me to learn from you, use you as a model. So much pretense. Mom always said be good, listen to your father. How do you expect me to be like you!" Then, in his song "End of the World", we see a different aspect of him. "Wanting to smile, to disguise the fallen tears. Gently nod, admit the fear of darkness. I just need, you to be at my side for a while. And you, won't bestow a small bit of sympathy."
Ultimately, it is Jay's talent that has brought him to fame.
