Alligator 是指產在美國東南部一種很像鱷魚但嘴巴較短的動物，是一種鱷魚的專稱。

Crocodile 是統稱，分為很多種。

Alligator和Crocodile的區別：

alligator是短吻鱷，生物學上屬於短吻鱷屬，現存的物種只有兩個：中國的揚子鱷和美國的密西西比短吻鱷。也就是說，alligator只存在於中國和美國。顧名思義，短吻鱷的嘴巴短一點，不過很難看出來，更容易的區分方法是短吻鱷的嘴巴比較方，呈U型。

crocodile一般特指鱷科，包括十餘個物種，分布在世界各地。它們與短吻鱷的區別在於嘴巴比較尖，呈V型。
