二掌握猜詞技巧，培養猜詞能力
在英語閱讀時,遇到生詞就停下來查詞典,就會影響思維的連續性、閱讀速度甚至失去了閱讀興趣。在我們的英語教學中常常提到根據上下文了解詞義,即在碰到難以理解的詞語時,可以引導學生根據詞彙語境線索和已知信息及構詞法來進行推測。掌握猜詞解義的方法,有助於提高閱讀能力。下面我想說說常見的幾種猜詞方法：
1. 根據語境線索或上下文猜詞
我們常說「詞不離句」，就是對於詞語的正確理解依賴於一定的句子（包括上下文）語境。所以在猜測生詞詞義時，一定要認真讀懂與生詞密切相關的前後句子，對生詞進行合情合理而又合乎上下文語境的推測。如： 1）Some college graates are seen scouringjob information in newspapers, the Internet and job market worldwide. 根據上文的內容可以斷定scouring的意思是「收集」，意義是「collecting」。
2）Here are some simple ways to beat the stress often caused by our inventions!
Don』t be availableall the time. Turn off your mobile phone at certain times of the day. Don』t check your e-mail every day. Don』t reply to somebody as soon as they leave a text message just because you can. It may be fun at first, but it soon gets annoying.
根據語境知道available的詞義為「可與之交談的」或「有空的」。
2. 根據前後文對比猜詞
有的文章中的生詞作者已經給出了一定的對比背景，這種背景往往以反義或對照等方式出現。我們在閱讀時要注意一些表示對比的詞, 如：however, yet, not, but, while, despite, in spite of, compared with, for one thing, for another thing；on the one hand，on the other hand, nevertheless(然而，不過)，instead(of), rather than等。如： 1) We were no longer passively waiting for the bell, but actively attended the lesson. 句中passively waiting for the bell和後面片語actively attended the lesson是對比關系，由此可知waiting for the bell的意思是「expecting the end of the class」。
2) Professor Jackson's attitude showed his concern. The students'attitudes, on the other hand, were very casual.在此句中，casual對一部分學生來說很可能不熟悉，但有on the other hand這個短語，可以推斷出此句是在對照老師和學生的兩種態度，那麼casual應為concern的反義詞，表示「淡漠的，漠不關心的」。
3. 根據前後因果關系猜詞
有些生詞詞義的猜測需要依靠上下文的因果關系來進行推斷，我們可根據原因推測結果，也可根據結果推測原因。英語中通常用於表示因果關系的詞語有because, as, since, for, so, thus, as a result, therefore, as a result of , because of , as a consequence of , so...that等。如： 1) There were so many people in the classroom that she had to elbow her way through the crowd. 根據句中的so many people in the classroom，可知that 引導的結果狀語從句中的elbow為「擠，擠過」之意。
2）You shouldn't have blamed her for that, for it wasn't her fault.
在句中for引導原因狀語從句( 那不是他的錯) ，可猜出blame 的詞義是"責備" 。
4. 根據標點符號暗示猜詞
在一些文章中，會出現括弧、冒號、破折號等標點符號，這些符號可以為一些生詞直接提供解釋或定義，同時也為讀者理解或猜測生詞詞義提供了很好的線索。例：
1）Tornadoes(violent and destructive whirl wind)normally occur on hot, humid (a little wet)day, but not necessarily in the summer. 此句中，"tornado"和"humid"二詞的詞義都在括弧里清楚地表述出來。"tornado"即一種非常劇烈的、破壞性很大的旋轉的風，很明顯，意思是"旋風﹑颶風"；"humid"即有點濕，其詞義很清楚是"潮濕的"的意思。在這種情況下，利用括弧作為猜詞線索，在一瞬間就能猜出其詞義來，閱讀可繼續進行，不會因生詞而影響閱讀速度。
2）Smoking — one of the cause of disease of the lungs and respiratory tract. It is bad for our health. It causes cancer of lungs, so we must stop smoking.
通過Smoking 破折號後面的解釋:它能導致肺病和呼吸道疾病,有害於人們的身體,我們必須禁止它。我們不難得出Smoking 的詞義是「吸煙」。其實在很多的英語閱讀文章中只要我們抓住了它們的特徵,遇到的生詞就會迎刃而解了。
5. 根據定語從句、同位語或同位語從句猜詞
學會分析文中的一些復合句，對於我們猜詞有很大的幫助作用。
例：He was a prestidigitatorwho entertained the children by pulling rabbits out of his hats, swallowing fire, and other similar tricks.
此句中，who引導的定語從句對生詞"prestidigitator"的詞義給出了非常清楚的定義。根據這一定義，讀者就不難猜測出"prestidigitator"的詞義。能從帽子里拉出兔子、吞火和玩其他類似的把戲的人不就是變戲法的人嗎？所以，prestidigitator 在句中的意思應為「變戲法的人」
6. 根據單詞構詞法猜詞
根據基本的構詞法知識來推測生詞的詞義。基本的構詞法包括前綴、後綴、復合詞等，學生們若在平時就積累了一定的構詞法知識並在考試時充分運用，效果有時是很明顯的。如：
常見的前綴有：
super- 超……；mini- 小型的……；re- 再，又……；post- 後；pre- 前；fore- 前；under- 下；over-過分的，過量的；anti-防止、反對；multi- 多樣的，許多
常見的後綴有： -ment 名詞的後綴；-less 不，無；-proof 防……的；-ist從事某種職業的人，與某事有關的人 例：
Remember that people online may not be who they seen. Because you can』t see or even hear the person, it would be very easy for someone to misrepresent himself/herself. Thus someone says 「She is a 12-year-old girl 」could really be an old man.
根據語境和misrepresent的構詞方式，前綴mis-的意思是「誤，錯的」，詞根represent的意思是「表達，展示」之意, 合在一起我們知道misrepresent的詞義為「誤述，歪曲」。
7.根據生活常識猜詞
根據日常生活中的常識和相關的背景知識，大膽想像，合理發揮，推測出生詞的含義。例：
1）Doctors believe that smoking cigarettes is detrimentalto our health.
「吸煙有害健康」，這是眾人皆知的常識，由此可知detrimental的意思應該是「有害的」。
2）Warm-blooded desert animals, such as rats and mice, rest ring the day, often staying in cool underground burrows.
根據常識我們知道鼠類一般藏在洞里，因此生詞burrows的意思為「地洞，洞穴」。
8．根據文中代詞的指代猜詞
高考題中常考查對文中代詞的實際指代對象。一般說來，它實際指代的對象是會在含有代詞的句子前半部分或前一句話。例：
The book contained a great many clues to help readers find the hare, but he put in lots of 「red herrings」, or false clues, to mislead them.
根據語境句中的代詞them指代上文的readers。
總之，閱讀是英語學習中重要的一個環節，也是我們考試中分值很大的一部分。然而英語單詞浩如煙海，在英文閱讀時，我們不可避免的會遇到生詞，遇到生詞首先要保持頭腦冷靜，切勿緊張，要認真地觀察和分析，採用恰當的猜詞策略，可以加深對文章上下文的理解程度，對提高我們的閱讀能力有很大的幫助。
