Mole 6
Vocabulary and Listening (Students』 book : P55)
Interviewer: William Norris has just returned from South Africa, where he was a volunteer in the Tembe Nature Reserve. William, how long were you there for?
William Norris: Only three months, unfortunately.
Interviewer: What wild animals can you see in the reserve?
William Norris: Elephants, mainly. Elephants are still being killed by poachers in other parts of Africa. It's really upsetting. But at least in the reserve they are protected.
Interviewer: How many are there in the reserve?
William Norris: About 250, I think.
Interviewer: What other animals are there?
William Norris: There are plenty of other mammals including lions, and a rare species of antelope, the suni antelope.
Interviewer: What was your job?
William Norris: My job was to keep an eye on the lions. We had to study their behaviour and monitor their movements in the reserve.
Interviewer: That sounds dangerous. Was it dangerous?
William Norris: Yes, I suppose it was. I had to go out in the jeep at night with two rangers, and look for them.
Interviewer: Did you see them often?
William Norris: Yes, almost every night. Sometimes we took some fresh meat with us and waited for them to appear. Then we put on a bright light to watch them. Sometimes they made such a terrible din that the doors of the jeep shook!
Interviewer: Were you frightened?
William Norris: I was a little bit worried, yes.
Interviewer: What was the most exciting thing you saw?
William Norris: Perhaps it was seeing two female lions go for a wild pig. It's a pity I didn't have my camera with me.
Interviewer: What happened?
William Norris: Well, they caught it. But then the pig began to fight, even though it was badly hurt. I think the lions were surprised. Anyway, in the end they left it and just went away. The pig's will to live was just too strong.
Interviewer: You obviously had an interesting time as a volunteer. Why was it important for you personally?
William Norris: It was important for lots of reasons. Especially because it made me think. And it made me realise that, if we really want to, we can do a lot to help animals in their struggle to survive.

Listening and Speaking (Students』 book : P100)
Lingling: Hi, Kate. Hullo Peter. Let's go in. I've got a brochure which should tell us what we're going to see. Now — let's see — it says that London Zoo opened in 1828 and was the first scientific zoo in the world.
Peter: What?
Kate: Well, there had been other zoos, which were just for people to come and look at the animals. But this one wasn't even open to the public until 1847.
Peter: Why not?
Kate: My teacher said that at first it was just there for scientists to study a few animals.
Peter: Oh I see ... I wonder how many animals they've got now.
Lingling: Um ... oh yes, it says there are more than 650 species at the zoo, of which 112 are endangered.
Kate: That's fantastic ... and they're famous for breeding animals too, aren't they?
Peter: My teacher told us that they breed 130 species. Look — there's a baby over there! A little monkey holding onto its mother's back. And look, there's another baby — a baby elephant, going for a walk round the zoo with its mother!
Kate: There's so much to see — shall we each choose an animal? I'd like to see a panda ...
Peter: Me too ... how about you Lingling?
Lingling: My uncle told me about a huge lizard called a Komodo dragon ... it's about 3 metres long. I'd like to see one.
Kate: Wow — OK, let's go to the reptiles ...
Lingling: That must be it — look! It's huge.
Peter: The Komodo dragon comes from Indonesia. It can weigh as much as 126 kilos. There are only about 500 breeding females left in the wild ... and only a few thousand left at all. That's awful!
Lingling: It's said that many of them have been killed, and the forests where they live have been burnt down.
Kate: Lucky the zoo has some, or they would be extinct. But why do people kill them?
Lingling: They are frightened of them. They can be dangerous.
Peter: The sign says that they eat mostly other animals, oh, and people too — but not very often ...
Kate: Let's go and see the pandas.
Lingling: That's funny — this sign says "pandas" ... but these are so small and they aren't black and white.
Kate: They are red pandas — they come from China, India and Nepal and hide in bamboo forests. And they are endangered. How sad — they are so lovely! About 60 centimetres long, with a long tail — and beautiful red and brown fur.
Lingling: Oh look — that one is eating bamboo. So they really are pandas!
Peter: Hey, look over here. This sign says: Look straight ahead and you will see the most dangerous animal of all ... I don't understand — this is a mirror ...
Kate: You can see yourself, can't you?
Peter: So what?
Lingling: Well — it means that people are the most dangerous animals of all.
Peter: Oh!
