在英語中,就像中文,我們改變我們說話的方式在與不同的人談話的時候。你使用的表達方式可能決定於你和誰談話或者你有多熟悉他們。如果你對你的老師說:「我的書在哪兒?」這聽起來很粗魯。但是如果你說:「不好意思,威斯特先生。你知道我的書在哪兒嗎?」你的問題聽起來將會更有禮貌。另一方面,說「我的書在哪兒?」這種情況可能也是對的,或許和你親近的人。
另外你不用經常說「Peter,借我你的鋼筆。」一句像這句很直接的英語的話聽起來很粗魯。有禮貌得用英語提問會更長,包括「請問你能……?」或者「我能詢問……?」「Peter,請問你能借我你的鋼筆嗎?」聽起來更禮貌。有時候我們甚至需要去花費時間是引導出一個問題。舉個例子,如果你攔住一個在路上走的一個陌生人,我們開始可能要在請求他的幫助之前說「不好意思。我想要知道你是不是願意去幫助我?」或者「我很抱歉去打擾你。」
