繼人工智慧機器人挑戰高考,又有智能機器向大學英語六級翻譯題發起沖擊。

這次的「考生」是科大訊飛研製的一套機器翻譯系統。12月18日下午,它在不到一分鍾的時間內,完成了三天前全國大學英語六級考試中的三道翻譯真題,並獲得了13分的平均分。

閱卷後,上海交通大學外語學院副教授紀小凌點評道,「經過評估,我們認為,當前機器翻譯在大學英語六級翻譯中能夠准確轉達原文意思,譯文流暢,結構清晰,基本沒有語言錯誤,能較好輔助不同語言的信息交流。參考往年大學英語六級考試中考生在翻譯考題中的表現,當前機器翻譯能夠達到優秀的水平。」

現場:斷網環境下,5秒內可答一道題平均得13分

本次測試在安徽省合肥師范學院逸夫教學樓B402室舉行,有公證處人員在現場監督。

試題來源於12月15日剛剛結束的全國大學英語六級統一考試中的三道翻譯真題(三套試卷各一題)。為確保在斷網和無人工干預的情況下測評,參與測評的機器和系統於14日被封存在公證處。

大學英語六級每次考試的通過率為30%左右,三套不同的試卷中,翻譯考題為一道「段落漢譯英 」,規定答題時間30分鍾 ,占總分15%。

對於翻譯題來說,詞彙量很重要,英語六級詞彙量要求達到6000個,不乏生僻詞彙和短語。由於漢英間表達習慣的不同,邏輯、語序調整也十分重要。

澎湃新聞在測試現場看到,18日14時,在公證人員的見證下,監考人員啟封並向機器錄入考題,每道題機器翻譯系統僅花費3-5秒便完成作答。導出文本後,結果交給閱卷專家評分。

14時30分,專家組開始閱卷,該專家組由上海交通大學外語學院副教授紀小凌以及翻譯系講師張菁組成。評分依據為:每道題取兩位評分專家的平均分,再計算三道題的平均分。

經現場打分,評卷人紀小凌宣布:「根據大學英語六級翻譯的閱卷標准,(此次機器翻譯系統的)平均分達到13分(滿分15分),參考往年大學英語六級考試中考生在翻譯考題中的表現,當前機器翻譯能夠達到優秀的水平。」

紀小凌點評道:「經過評估,我們認為,當前機器翻譯在大學英語六級翻譯中能夠准確轉達原文意思,譯文流暢,結構清晰,基本沒有語言錯誤,在具體層面翻譯較好,能較好輔助不同語言的信息交流。」

對於此次機器翻譯的表現,紀小凌對澎湃新聞稱:「超過了我的預期。有比較意外的錯誤,不過總體來說表現很好,(翻譯的)准確性和地道性都不錯」。

對於這一結果,18日,科大訊飛研究院副院長翻譯技術負責人劉俊華對澎湃新聞表示,翻譯系統的成績在在意料之中,但得到的評價超過了預計。他說,「下一步,還將根據專家評估和意見,進一步完善翻譯系統,可能還會挑戰其他英語翻譯考試。」

據科大訊飛方介紹,在參加此次評測前,其研發人員在2014年6月到2018年6月的大學英語六級26道翻譯考題上進行了測試,平均分達到12.8分,與此次測試結果基本持平,「這也說明機器翻譯可以穩定在高水平。」

幕後:難點在於自然語言的復雜性

隨著以深度學習為代表的第三次人工智慧技術的發展,機器翻譯取得了長足的進步,在簡單應用場景下跨過了應用門檻。

在今年5月舉行的「第二屆世界智能大會」上,科大訊飛股份有限公司董事長劉慶峰就曾表示,人工智慧翻譯英語已經達到了大學英語六級水平,下一步將實現八級水平。

對於舉行此次測評的初衷,18日,劉俊華表示,大學英語六級考試是一種權威客觀的衡量方式,「藉助於六級中的翻譯考題,我們想客觀公正地給出當前以漢譯英為例的機器翻譯技術水平的評估,包括還存在哪些差距。一方面為後續研究提供思路,另方面也可進一步指導機器翻譯技術應用。」

「但機器翻譯還是很難」,他說,「主要是其處理的對象——自然語言存在復雜性。」這位研發人員介紹,自然語言是人類在社會生活中,通過不斷的重復性使用而自然進化形成的溝通媒介(語言),並且在此過程中缺少規劃和設計,使得語言本身就存在諸多不確定性,「同樣一句話,在不同的語境中不同人就有不同的理解。」
