In Another World
Here I am, in China, half way around the world from home. As I look at my clock and calculate（計算） the time back home I realize that half a world away, people are busy getting ready for a wedding. The bride is my niece（侄女）, a person I first met when she was three days old.
I think back to the first time I had the opportunity to become acquainted with（開始了解；知道 熟悉） my niece. As my sister cradled（n 搖籃 vt 撫育） her in her arms, the infant（adj嬰兒的 幼稚的 未成年的 初期的n.嬰兒） girl clasped（緊抱） her mother's outstretched（伸開的） finger. The couple had an engagement party when I was at home in Canada a few months ago. The party was in the form of a picnic in a beautiful rose garden. There are some indivials who argue that, compared to the environment protection, the top priority is supposed to given to economic development. They deem that environmental problems are inevitable and unavoidable in the process of economic development. They are only the by procts of economic development, which can be handled later when we have the time and money.
However, other indivials hold different opinions that(或者：other holders of the opposite opinions argue that ) environment protection should be attached more importance than economic development in that present serious environmental problems will threaten the health of the residents and hinder the advance of the economy.
As far as I am concerned, environmental protection and economic development can coexist in parallel and can stay in harmony. Our ultimate aim in economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. What is the point of economic development if we achieve it at the cost of our environment? There has been much evidence to prove that a balance between the two helps more rapid and continuous development of the society.
