大學英語四級考試，即CET-4，College English Test Band 4的縮寫，是由國家教育部高等教育司主持的全國性英語考試。考試的主要對象是根據教育大綱修完大學英語四級的在校專科生、本科生或研究生。大學英語四、六級標准化考試自1986年末開始籌備，1987年正式實施。

大學英語四級考試已引起全國各高等院校及有關教育領導部門對大學英語教學的重視，調動了師生的積極性。效度研究的大量統計數據和實驗材料證明大學英語六級考試不但信度高，而且效度高，符合大規模標准化考試的質量要求，能夠按教學大綱的要求反映我國大學生的英語水平，因此有力地推動了大學英語教學大綱的貫徹實施，促進了我國大學英語教學水平的提高。
